Protecting Yourself on Free Wi-Fi
Grigore Marchis, ConvergeSecure® Engineer

Grigore MarchisIf you've been watching the news, then you are aware of several celebrities and public figures who have had their Twitter, Facebook, or email accounts hacked. This does not mean that you have to be a celebrity to learn the hard way that precautions need to be taken when accessing and using open Wi-Fi "hotspots."

The appeal of free Internet is the ability to get easy access to the world while at airports, coffee shops, hotels, and while visiting many other businesses. The seemingly mutually beneficial relationship between the customers, which gain internet access to do their work, socialize, or just kill time, and the businesses, which are able to keep customers in their establishment longer and thus increase the chances of further purchases, is filled with security risks. These risks are predators which use these free unsecured wireless networks to get access to you, and your data.

Target Date of 2018 Set for Elimination of Legacy PSTN Network:

What Does this Mean for E911?

Karina Yandell, 911 ETC

911 Etc Logo The FCC's Technology Advisory Council released a report on June 30, 2011 addressing the inevitable transition from our nation's current PSTN legacy network to an all IP infrastructure. The report finds that by 2014, United States consumers will have 31.6 million VoIP lines, accounting for 42.5% of all U.S. access lines.

As the number of subscribers on the PSTN decreases, the cost per remaining customer increases. The report finds that maintaining the PSTN will quickly become untenable, and that an accelerated transition will not only generate significant economic activity, but actually lower total cost. The TAC recommends that the FCC begin to take steps to expedite the transition, with a target date for the elimination of the PSTN network set for 2018. The report explains that adoption of IP will happen much faster if manufacturers know there is a set date at which time they'll no longer be able to rely upon the PSTN.

Are you IPv6 Ready?
Free Fortinet White Paper on IPv6 Migration

Fortinet LogoFor 24 hours on June 8, 2011, from 0000 to 2359 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), Fortinet was one of the world's leading vendors, content providers, and service providers that participated in the first global field test of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6). We were proud to participate by enabling global IPv6 connectivity to www.fortinet.com.

We also enabled customers to view a demonstration of a FortiGate™Unified Threat Management platform enforcing policies on an IPv6 network, and receiving real-time threat updates from the FortiGuard Security Subscription Services via IPv6.

Fortinet has been a leader in the network security industry with its early support of IPv6, achieving both IPv6-Ready and JITC  certifications in 2008. We also earned USGv6 certification in 2011. Because of our commitment to two important customer segments, global telecommunications carriers and the US government, IPv6 compliance has always been a priority for us.

The time to plan the transition to IPv6 is NOW. A major transition from IPv4 to IPv6 is under way, now that the pool of available IPv4 addresses has been exhausted. Organizations of all sizes need to understand their preparedness for IPv6, as some legacy devices will never support IPv6 and will need to be replaced.

Fortinet IPv6 WhitepaperTo help you get started down the path of IPv6 migration, we created a white paper, "A Practical Guide for Beginning the Migration to IPv6" that describes the importance of securing the network against IPv6 threats well before the introduction of any IPv6 traffic, and how to begin securing a transitional IPv4/IPv6 network.

How to Sell Backup to Your CFO

Mark Campbell, Unitrends | Modern Backup 2 Blog

Backup & Recovery

A CEO throwing a party takes his executives on a tour of his opulent mansion. In the back of the property, the CEO has the largest swimming pool any of them has ever seen. The huge pool, however, is filled with hungry alligators.

The CEO says to his executives, "I think an executive should be measured by courage. Courage is what made me CEO. So this is my challenge to each of you: if anyone has enough courage to dive into the pool, swim through those alligators, and make it to the other side, I will give that person anything they desire. My job, my money, my house, anything!"

Everyone laughs at the outrageous offer and proceeds to follow the CEO on the tour of the estate. Suddenly, they hear a loud splash. Everyone turns around and sees the CFO in the pool, swimming for his life. He dodges the alligators left and right and makes it to the edge of the pool with seconds to spare. He pulls himself out just as a huge alligator snaps at his shoes.

The flabbergasted CEO approaches the CFO and says, "You are amazing. I've never seen anything like it in my life. You are brave beyond measure, and anything I own is yours. Tell me what I can do for you." The CFO, panting for breath, looks up and says, "You can tell me who the hell pushed me in the pool!!"

Saving Money with Web Filtering

Managed Services

How Does It Work?

Web Content Filtering (WCF) can be software only or a combination of software and hardware. The type of  WCF solution depends on your network and how much reporting you would like. Most solutions are group policy based, meaning that you place employees into groups and then filter those groups accordingly.

What Can You Block?

  • Content Categories
  • File Type
  • Instant Messaging (IM)

Allowing Access

Because some people need higher levels of access and functions, you can set filtering by the individual user or a group. You might want to block all social media sites. However, most businesses are using social media to promote their businesses so at minimum employees in a sales and/or marketing capacity need access to those sites as part of their daily duties.

Warning Policies

You can show employees a custom 'block page' but allow them to proceed after being warned. Warning policies are useful for reminding users about sites which may violate corporate Internet usage policy without blocking them outright. With CCC's WCF solution these events are recording the the monthly report to show which employees tried to access blocked content and whether or not they clicked through.

Time-based Exceptions

Another common feature is allowing access during specific time periods. You could let all your employees have access to Facebook over their lunch break.

Spyware and Virus Protection

You can block access to known spyware sites, spyware downloads, and detect and block spyware activity.

Return on investment (ROI)

Here's the scenario: Your business has 30 employees with an average salary of $38,000 per year or $18 per hour. Various studies report that the average employee spends anywhere from 20 minutes to two hours surfing the Internet each day, for this example let's use middle ground and say one hour per employee, per day.

A web content filtering solution from CCC would include about $1,900 in upfront expenses (hardware and professional services) and about $100 per month for ConvergeSecure® Managed Security Service to provide management and monthly reporting for Web Content Filtering. That is $3,100 for the first year to save $28,080 in lost productivity. Even though this is a rough estimate, it's hard to ignore that math!

(Not to mention our full suite of security services can be delivered via the same appliance.)
