FLAGSTAFF LEADERSHIP PROGRAM E-LETTERMay 2010

pallet 2008

Mission: Flagstaff Leadership fosters strong community leadership volunteers by providing people of diverse perspectives and backgrounds from  both  the  public and private sectors with opportunities to connect, learn and lead.

A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD
It's a busy time of the year for the Flagstaff Leadership Program as we work to bring the current class year to a successful and productive close while preparing for next year and beyond. Our recruitment timeframe has ended and we are currently in the process of interviewing candidates for next year's class. Thanks to everybody who helped us recruit applicants this year by encouraging friends and co-workers to apply. We have a great group of potential class members for next year and are looking forward to the selection process in the next month.

We are also thrilled to be preparing for graduation - our 20th! - and our Graduation Committee has been hard at work to create an event that recognizes the accomplishments of the current class and celebrates our organization's milestone. We hope you will join us for graduation on Tuesday, June 1, starting at 5:30 p.m. at Radisson. An e-vite for the event was sent out a couple weeks ago, but if you missed it and want more information, please send me an email and I'd be happy to connect you to the right person and information!

FLP is also working this year on our fundraiser - a wine tasting event at Olive Garden. We are fortunate to have partnered with Olive Garden again this year, as they host this event to benefit our organization. The Wine Tasting is set for Saturday, July 10 in the afternoon. Exact times and additional details will be sent out so keep a look out, but mark your calendars now! As part of this event we will be having a silent auction so if you'd like to donate an item for the silent auction, please let Barbara Worgess, our treasurer know - she can be reached at bworgess@coconino.az.gov.

Unfortunately, during this time of celebration and activity, we also must pause to mark the passing of two great FLPers who will be greatly missed. Karen Cooper was not only a wonderful, giving and thoughtful member of our community, but she was part of the FLP family, serving on the Board of Directors, working as the Class Mom for many classes (including my own) and participating as a member of the Class of 1999. Mike Terrin, who we sadly and unexpectedly lost last week, was a member of the class of 2009. Mike was truly an inspiration to us all; his volunteer service and dedication to the police department and the citizens of Flagstaff ensure his impact on our community will be felt for many years.

TOM'S JOKES

An officer stopped a guy for swerving.  The driver explained that there was a box in the road and he needed to leave the lane to miss it.  The officer checked, found a large crate of upholstery nails, returned to the driver and said he'd still have to write him a ticket.  The upset driver asked why?  The officer replied, "tacks evasion!"

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT-
Meet Alice Ferris - Class of 1998

Alice L. Ferris earns Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive (ACFRE) credential

AFP has awarded its highest professional certification, the Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive (ACFRE), to Alice L. Ferris in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Available only to senior-level fundraisers who have worked in the profession for 10 or more years, the ACFRE is a distinguished achievement earned by only 90 professionals worldwide since the inception of the program in 1992.

The ACFRE program is the most rigorous certification process available to professional fundraisers. The process includes a comprehensive application, detailing achievements in practice, education, publishing, teaching, and service to the profession; a written examination that measures a candidate's knowledge of fundraising as well as the philosophical, ethical, and social aspects of philanthropy; a portfolio representing the candidate's body of professional work; and an oral peer review in which the candidate must articulate a mastery of advanced-level knowledge in fundraising management, leadership, and ethics.

Ms. Ferris, the 90th recipient of the ACFRE designation and presently the youngest to hold the credential, was honored for her achievement during AFP's 47th International Conference on Fundraising in Baltimore on April 13th. Alice is one of only three fundraising professionals in Arizona to attain the ACFRE.

Ms. Ferris is founding partner of GoalBusters Consulting, LLC, a consulting firm providing strategic planning, campaign direction, social media marketing, fundraising training and board development. Clients include KAWC Colorado River Public Media, the Hopi Education Endowment Fund, The Hopi Foundation, Arizona Western College Foundation, the Northern Apache Special Health Care District, and others.

Ms. Ferris serves as Vice Chair for Member and Chapter Services for the AFP International Board of Directors and also serves as President of the AFP Northern Arizona Chapter. Alice also serves on the boards of the Flagstaff Rotary Club and the Flagstaff Cooperative Preschool. She is also a past board member of FLP. In addition, Ms. Ferris contributes substantial volunteer time as an on-air host for Arizona PBS (Phoenix, Ariz.), Arizona Public Media (Tucson, Ariz.) and other nonprofit video production.
