A glimpse into the life and thoughts of an artist in Hawai`i

preliminary sketch by Patrice A Federspiel

I lost my journal today. I hope I find it tomorrow! This might not seem like

a big deal to some, but it is to me. Like many people, I've been keeping a journal for forty years, thanks to my friend C. Freeman, who I met during

my freshman year at the University of WI, Madison.

I keep all kinds of information in my journal, including preliminary notes for these eZines, so I am "winging it" here.

As you may recall, I've been taking Anthony Lee's "life-drawing" classes at the Honolulu Art Museum School. (I am an artist who both takes art lessons and gives art lessons to others.) Of course I continue to sketch, draw, and paint on my own.

One of my preliminary sketches is shown above. The model is a beautiful local Hawaiian gal and I may not be doing her justice. Nonetheless, like you, I am always trying to learn more and improve my painting skills.

I have turned her into an "almost-finished" painting below.

I also created my latest mermaid painting with her in mind.

Hibiscus Mermaid, original watercolor by Patrice A Federspiel This Hibiscus Mermaid sits along the shore, thinking of her love. Paradise is better when shared with someone special. The water here is warm, the air is always soft, the sun is brightly shining, the "Mokes" (Mokulua Islands off Kailua, HI)
are gently calling her.

This Hibiscus Mermaid
will be making her debut
at the I Love Kailua Town Party this Sunday,
April 22, from 11-3.

I hope to see you there!

If you can't make it to the party, no worries, you can order a print of her at www.artofaloha.com

Kaimuki Community School for Adults is offering a summer session. Many of you know that the community schools for adults are under review and are expected to lose funding. This could be our last chance to show lawmakers that Kaimuki CSA serves a purpose in many people's lives.

I will be teaching Beginning Watercolor on six Monday nights in May and June, 2012 from 6:30-9pm. Please sign up early, there will only be 20 spaces, one of them has your name on it!

Registration begins Saturday, April 28th, 8am.

Patrice painting Tumbing Pineapples at Kuloko Arts Hawai`i
Born in Port Washington, WI and educated at the University of Wisconsin/Madison, Patrice Federspiel first visited Hawai`i in January 2000. Within five months she had found a way to quit her job, sell her home, and move to Hawai`i to paint.

Previously an oil painter, Patrice learned the joys of watercolor upon her arrival in Honolulu in June 2000. She has been painting full time ever since. It is her intention to live her "Real Life" creatively, from the inside out; and to inspire others, through her paintings, art lessons, words, and example, to do the same.

Patrice is currently the president of the  Hawai`i Watercolor Society.

"I paint with passion, live without regrets, and move joyfully forward through life." -Patrice Federspiel
