Setting Intentions

Sometimes the day looms large before us. It feels like there is SO much to be done and only so much time in which to do it. We don't know where to begin. That is when "overwhelm" threatens to take hold.

When that happens, we can begin by setting an "intention" for the time we have available.

Setting an intention is different from setting a goal. Intention is broader in base. Setting your intention is like setting the foundation upon which a goal could be built.

Think of intention as your scaffolding for the day. A goal can feel rigid and "right-brained"; intention feels open and free.

When we remember to set our intention, we are remembering that we have the freedom to choose our focus for the day, for the next hour, even for the next ten minutes.

Setting an intention is a conscious choice and requires a bit of inner reflection. Here are a few questions to ask yourself when you want to set your intention:

How do you want to spend the next hour (day, or week)?

Intend to spend your time in that manner.

What do you want to accomplish? Intend to do so.

How do you want to feel when the task before is finished?
Set your intention to feel that way.

What is the result you want to achieve at the end of the day?
Intend to achieve that result.

Setting your intention is personal and sets the tone for the task, the hour, or the day ahead.

The trick with intention is to remember to set it. Go ahead, set an intention right now and see how it feels.

Each time you set an intention you are signaling your inner self that your time is valuable, that the task before you is valuable, and, yes, that you are valuable.

Go ahead. Set your intention and feel the difference it can make in your life.

SeaHorsing Around Mermaid original painting by Patrice A Federspiel

The  Lanikai Art and Craft Fair is this Saturday, May 5 from 9-3pm

Please come to the fair and be sure to say hello to me. I'll be right inside the Pavillion.

My new mermaid painting, "SeaHorsing Around" will be making her debut at the fair. I was painting her in the photo at the top of this page.

Seahorses are a colorful, whimsical fish living in warm tropical waters around the world. In Hawai`i, they can be found in the coastal reefs. The Hawaiian word for seahorse is mo`olio.

This mermaid is quite tiny. She is one of the rare "Lilliputian Mermaids" known to have domesticated the wild seahorse. Together these creatures romp in the surf, riding the waves of green sea grasses. It has been said they urge the unicorns to crash upon the shore as the wild white caps of the sea.

But that's not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully.

Patrice painting Tumbing Pineapples at Kuloko Arts Hawai`i
Born in Port Washington, WI and educated at the University of Wisconsin/Madison, Patrice Federspiel first visited Hawai`i in January 2000. Within five months she had found a way to quit her job, sell her home, and move to Hawai`i to paint.

Previously an oil painter, Patrice learned the joys of watercolor upon her arrival in Honolulu in June 2000. She has been painting full time ever since. It is her intention to live her "Real Life" creatively, from the inside out; and to inspire others, through her paintings, art lessons, words, and example, to do the same.

Patrice is currently the president of the  Hawai`i Watercolor Society.

"I paint with passion, live without regrets, and move joyfully forward through life." -Patrice Federspiel
