A glimpse into the life and thoughts of an artist

Patrice in Life Drawing Class at Linekona School (Academy of Art), Honolulu Joy
Joy Joy

I am back in school, taking life drawing
and loving it!

We started with a skeleton and will graduate to live models in the weeks to come.

There was a time when I was in college that my parents thought that I would never graduate; sound familiar?

It took me five years to get my degree, that really isn't that bad, is it?

We all love to learn!

We are not always crazy about the homework, but that is part of the process. I smiled when I heard the instructor, Anthony Lee, tell us that to improve, we have to practice after class.

It was like hearing an echo of myself speaking to my own students.

Last week I watched the movies Seabiscuit and Secretariat; even though I have seen them three or four times and know the ending, they still make me cry.

Both of these horses seem to have known the joy of the "race"; but perhaps it is more than that. Maybe it is the thrill of seeing limits being pushed; of watching talent and genius fully expressed and celebrated that exhilarates us all.

The movies don't focus on all the work that goes into training for the races. They don't discuss the hardships, the pains, or the times the horses and trainers would have rather been doing something else.

And rightly so; we know those aspects of life all too well.

It takes discipline to be at the top of our form, to win the race, to beat the odds.

Discipline isn't a "sexy" word. It doesn't have to be a "dirty" word either.

If we want to reap the rewards, we have to do the work necessary to get there. We have to discipline ourselves.

We have to reward ourselves too.

Each of us has our own unique internal talent and genius. Imagine how exciting a world this will be when we fully express and celebrate it.

It might take more discipline for each of us to get there, but we are worth it. Our world is worth it.

How will I express my inner talent and myself today? How will you?

It is amazing and wonderful to realize that we actually do get to decide!

 Announcing Open Studio Tours!
Recently Jean Wall, ASID and Joan Robinson-Whitaker, ASID, IIDA of Designer for a Day took a tour of my studio in search of the perfect prints for one of their projects.

After listening to their needs and viewing the swatches of fabric they brought with them, we looked through my originals and prints, both on the walls and in my portfolio.

It was decided that enlarged giclée prints of Growing in All Directions and Growing Stronger Everyday would work perfectly.

There were time constraints, so I immediately called my printer and had the 36"Hx24"W giclée prints ready for them the very next day.

The room looks great, you can see the results for yourself:

Patrice painting Tumbing Pineapples at Kuloko Arts Hawai`i This island artist was born in Port Washington, WI and educated at the University of Wisconsin/Madison. Patrice Federspiel first visited Hawai`i in January 2000. Within five months she had found a way to quit her job, sell her home, and move to Hawai`i to paint.

Previously an oil painter, Patrice learned the joys of watercolor upon her arrival in Honolulu in June 2000. She has been painting full time ever since. It is her intention to live her "Real Life" creatively, from the inside out; and to inspire others, through her paintings, art lessons, words, and example, to do the same.

Patrice is a Signature Member and the current President of the Hawai`i Watercolor Society.

"I paint with passion, live without regrets, and move joyfully forward through life." -Patrice Federspiel
