A glimpse into the life and thoughts of an artist
|
|
This past Wednesday, as I hurried up the stairs on my way to meet Keanu for lunch, I tripped. And fell. And broke my left arm. At first I didn't realize the impact this quick spill would have on my life.
I hoped against hope that the sound I heard as my hand instinctively reached for the rapidly approaching ground was my imagination.
I clutched my wrist to my chest as I got up and continued to cross the street. I held it close to my heart in a grip I hoped was sending healing energy to the bones I feared I had broken -- all the way to urgent care.
Apparently I was, for they were only slightly broken. X-rays showed a hairline fracture with no displacement and no harm to the joint. PHEW!
Broken bones, even just slightly broken, are still broken. My perspective has changed and my persona shifted from that of the driver, to that of the passenger ... at least until I get my cast on Monday. Then I'll see how much individual mobility I have.
For now I will observe. I will watch the scenery while Keanu, or Rebecca, or Judy drives me to our now joint destination. I am seeing more of the world around me, and spending more time with these people that I love.
Funny thing is that I've had inklings change was in the air. Last week I started an experimental painting titled "Catching My Breath".
Here it is in the "hiding phase" of the "Hide-N-Seek" technique.
I hadn't had the time to paint it yet, but that might have just changed. I wonder what other changes are in store for me in the weeks to come.
I used to visit psychics to find out what my future might hold. Now it seems that if I really pay attention to the ideas floating through my mind, I can read my own "tea leaves".
Perhaps now, with one arm in a sling, would be a good time to try.

Born in Port Washington, WI and educated at the University of Wisconsin/Madison, Patrice Federspiel first visited Hawai'i in January 2000. Within five months she had found a way to quit her job, sell her home, and move to Hawai'i to paint.
Previously an oil painter, Patrice learned the joys of watercolor upon her arrival in Honolulu in June 2000. She has been painting full time ever since. It is her intention to live her "Real Life" creatively, from the inside out; and to inspire others, through her paintings, art lessons, words, and example, to do the same.
"I paint with passion, live without regrets, and move joyfully forward through life." -Patrice Federspiel
