There are as many reasons to create art as there are people who do so.

Some of us would feel incomplete if we couldn't create. Others do it to unwind and relax. Many of us find art to be a useful tool for self-expression, self-exploration, and self-transformation.

By consciously watching the manner in which we create, we have the opportunity to view the way in which we interact with the rest of the world on a microscopic level.

Creating any kind of art involves recognizing existing relationships and creating new ones.

Your first relationship is always with yourself. YOU are the most important element in all of your creative endeavors. Remember this before, during, and after your projects.

Your whole body comes into play when you create. You use it to move around your subject matter and your piece, to think up your ideas, to moderate your time spent, and to critique your work.

Please remember to use your body to enjoy and encourage your work as well. You have an eye for what looks and feels right to you and what doesn't. Use your heart when making decisions as well as your eyes.

Use the "eye of your heart" to watch the five year old within you paint. Then feel and encourage her/his joy in the work as you create.

Another relationship you develop is with your subject matter, your response to it, and the manner in which you put it onto the paper.

How do you decide what you will paint? What choices and decisions do you make while you paint? What relationships do you create within your painting and with your viewer?

How do you direct the viewer to see your intention in a piece? How do you decide what next steps to take while painting?

If you are excited about your subject matter, chances are good you will convey that to your viewer. Keep your excitement alive. Position your subject matter in a way that invites the viewer into your world to feel your joy.

Then follow your first instinct, your impulse, and let your imagination take you and your subject matter on a painting excursion. Have fun with your painting.

If you are looking for ways to feel more connected to your painting, perhaps you are ready to take a Hide-N-Seek Watercolor Workshop

This is what previous students had to say about the class:

"Thank you for providing opportunities for a non-artist, non-drawer to enjoy watercolor." ~ Terri

"Because of my draftsman background, everything has scale
and lines, and what this class taught me to do is use my imagination and not worry about lines. Personally I need to get over making errors and just paint!"
~ Wayne

"What a wonderful class! You have a great teaching style - encouraging, up-beat, and fun. It was well worth the trip from the mainland. The venue was lovely, the food fine.  The class was an admirable combination of efficiency and artistic ambience."

~ Alice W. O'Sullivan

  **********

two hands squeezing blood from a turnipBorn in Port Washington, WI and educated at the University of Wisconsin/Madison, Patrice Federspiel first visited Hawai'i in January 2000. Within five months she had found a way to quit her job, sell her home, and move to Hawai'i to paint.

Previously an oil painter, Patrice learned the joys of watercolor upon her arrival in Honolulu in June 2000. She has been painting full time ever since. It is her intention to live her "Real Life" creatively, from the inside out; and to inspire others, through her paintings, art lessons, words, and example, to do the same.

"I paint with passion, live without regrets, and move joyfully forward through life." -Patrice Federspiel
