A glimpse into the life and thoughts of an artist

Growing Sunshine original watercolor by Patrice Ann Federspiel

By the time I had walked for 22 minutes, I had taken two or three photos of the sunrise over the ocean.

Soon after I turned around and was heading downhill, I saw the spout of a whale.

That's when it hit me:

Size Matters!

It's the majesty of the sunrise and the whales that inspire us. The strength of their beauty strikes a chord in our heart and we feel a sense of awe.

Rather than feeling small in comparison, we are inspired to live from our inner, larger-than-life self.

On days our inner self is feeling low (or more likely we are not feeling in touch with our inner self), we are wise to stick with small projects and take small steps toward feeling better and "bigger" once more.

Paintings come in all shapes and sizes; they can be large or small. In 2010, I painted 29 paintings equal to or smaller than 15"Hx11"W, and 11 paintings larger than 15"x11".

Who cares? Well, this realization really surprised me! I had no idea I had spent 2010 painting almost three times more small paintings than large.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE to paint large! I love the movement created on the page and the feeling a larger painting evokes when viewed.

This year, my intention is to live from a larger perspective and inspire others to do the same. I have decided to paint more large paintings than small.

To date I have completed eight paintings: one smaller than 15x11, four 15x11, and three larger than 15x11. I also have five more paintings in progress: all larger than 15x11.

Growing Sunshine, the pineapple painting at the top of this eZine, measures 20.5"Hx15"W. It has been accepted into the Hawai'i Watercolor Society's Members' Exhibit March 29-April 23, 2011.

Sunrise over the ocean in Waikiki

This is one of the sunrise photos I mentioned at the top of the eZine; I hope it brings an added bit of warmth to your day.

Back to that whole Size Matters thing ... what do you think? Does size always matter? Is small sometimes better? Does it really matter?

two hands squeezing blood from a turnipBorn in Port Washington, WI and educated at the University of Wisconsin/Madison, Patrice Federspiel first visited Hawai'i in January 2000. Within five months she had found a way to quit her job, sell her home, and move to Hawai'i to paint.

Previously an oil painter, Patrice learned the joys of watercolor upon her arrival in Honolulu in June 2000. She has been painting full time ever since. It is her intention to live her "Real Life" creatively, from the inside out; and to inspire others, through her paintings, art lessons, words, and example, to do the same.
