Mango Mania
Mango season isn't here yet, but it is just around the corner.

Mango Trees are either busy leafing out, sending out buds (left), or bearing green fruit (center). It won't be long before the fruit starts to turn colors, from blue-green, to red-violet to golden yellow (right).

original watercolor painting of Mango Mania by Patrice FederspielI have been the happy recipient of the luscious fruits found along the road when out walking. Sure, the fruit is bruised from the fall, but it still tastes great!

When you see the birds start to wobble from overeating the fermenting fallen fruit, it's time to get outside and pick the remaining mangoes off the trees!

A few years ago, the mangoes above right were on my walking path up to the Contemporary Museum, near my studio. They looked SO good they found their way into my painting, Mango Mania.

Can you see some of the shapes from the photo above echoed in the painting to the left?

I recently learned that Mango Mania has been accepted into The California Watercolor Association's 41st National Exhibit. The exhibit will be on display at the San Francisco Presidio, July 14 - September 19.

This is my first mainland exhibit and I am thrilled! Unfortunately I won't be able to see the exhibit. Although I am planning a trip to Berkeley in June (before the exhibit is up), I will be at the Haleiwa Arts Festival July 18 when the opening reception occurs.

If you are in the area, please go see the exhibit for me! While you are there, take a photo of yourself with the painting and send it to me.

For those of you not living near magnificent mango trees, you will be able to find mangoes in the grocery store in a few months. When you do, consider making this easy potato salad recipe from the Detox Diet Cookbook. It is amazingly good!

Spiced Potato Salad with Mango Dressing
Saute 1 T Olive oil, 1 sliced onion, and 1 clove crushed garlic for 10 min.
Stir in 1 tsp. cumin and 1 tsp. coriander and cook for a few seconds.
Stir in the cubed fruit of 1 mango and cook 5 min.
Remove from heat and add 2 T honey & 2 T lime juice.
Pour over 2 lbs. cooked new potatoes.

two hands squeezing blood from a turnipBorn in Port Washington, WI and educated at the University of Wisconsin/Madison, Patrice Federspiel first visited Hawai'i in January 2000. Within five months she had found a way to quit her job, sell her home, and move to Hawai'i to paint.

Previously an oil painter, Patrice learned the joys of watercolor upon her arrival in Honolulu in June 2000. She has been painting full time ever since. It is her intention to live her "Real Life" creatively, from the inside out; and to inspire others, through her paintings, art lessons, words, and example, to do the same.

"I paint with passion, live without regrets, and move joyfully forward through life." -Patrice Federspiel
