Go Ahead, Take the Plunge!

Patrice Federspiel Lion Dancer Pacific Islands Fine Art Festival  Aloha!
This is a photo of me feeding the Chinese Lion Dancer to ensure prosperity in 2010, at the Pacific Islands Fine Arts Festival in Kapiolani Park. Dennis McGeary is taking photos on the other side of the Lion. Dennis painted in the booth next to mine.

Mahalo to all of you who wrote to thank me for my last eZine, and to those who came to visit my tent at the arts festival. Some of you, like Jane from Ann Arbor, Michigan brought so much exuberance for my eZine that I'm still smiling. Thank you Jane!

Mermaid Take the Plunge watercolor painting

Take the Plunge is the painting I created at the Pacific Islands Art Festival.

The funny thing about art is that people often think it's all about the pretty picture
(or the sculpture, or the music, or the words), when in fact, it is sometimes NOT about those things ... at least not for the artist, or for the viewer in search of a deeper meaning.

Have you ever thought you might be attracted to a piece of art for more reasons than meet the eye? It could just be that you are attracted to one piece over another because it holds a deeper emotional meaning for you.

Most of my paintings have deeper meanings. That's why there is a written paragraph or two on the back. Whether or not the painting means the same thing to you, it is always interesting to learn the point of view of another person.

This painting (Take the Plunge) is clearly telling me it is time I move OUT of my comfort zone (AGAIN) and take the plunge into a new adventure! (You can read more of her message under her image.)

My paintings are intuitively guided and autobiographical in nature (no, I don't resemble this mermaid). It is a bit unnerving to admit that, but at least I know that "if" I am receiving this message in the form of a painting, then I am not the only person needing to take a plunge in life.

Someone besides me needs to see this painting and read her message! Right?

If this mermaid is speaking to you, you might be ready to "take a plunge" or make a change that doesn't feel easy. Rest assured that should you decide to purchase a print of "Take the Plunge" ($34 at www.artofaloha.com/shop), her presence will provide you with a measure of courage, and help make things feel a bit easier.

And there's more! I have a new video on YouTube!

Now you can paint along with me, Ron Kent, Tamara Moan, and Rebecca Snow, to create your own Ten Second Warm-up painting.

I came up with this "warm-up" painting method after reading Creativity Coach, Eric Maisel's book, Ten Zen Seconds. Dr. Maisel is widely regarded as America's foremost creativity coach and has taught thousands of creative & performing artists how to incorporate Ten Zen Second mindfulness techniques into their creativity practice.

Now that you have the image of "taking the plunge" in mind and the ease of a ten second approach to a warm-up painting, are you ready to take the plunge out of your comfort zone?

Venturing out of your comfort zone can be seen either as an adventure, or as scary.

It is important to remember that the difference between fear and excitement is all in our attitude. When you change your perspective from that of "scary" to that of "adventure", life becomes more fun.

It is amazing how quickly feelings change when we change the words we use to describe them. A visual reminder like Take the Plunge can help you switch your thoughts and your feelings.

Mahalo for reading my eZine and for staying in touch. You can spread aloha now by clicking on the forward button at the bottom of the eZine and share it with your friends on facebook or twitter.

How many of your friends are ready to "take a plunge"?

"There is an occupation known as painting, which calls for imagination, and skill of hand, in order to discover things not seen, hiding themselves under the shadow of natural objects, and to fix them with the hand, presenting to plain sight what does not actually exist."   - Cennino Cennini

Previously an oil painter, Patrice learned the joys of watercolor upon her arrival in Honolulu in June 2000. She has been painting full time ever since. It is her intention to live her "Real Life" creatively, from the inside out; and to inspire others, through her paintings, art lessons, words, and example, to do the same.
