Aloha!

Here I am painting Tree Diva at the Haleiwa Arts Festival in July. Three days after this photo was taken, I was on my way to Wisconsin for a summer vacation. I had a wonderful time and this edition of my eZine marks my return to a sort of "normalcy".

I have plans to change the format of this eZine; please watch for change in the editions to come. For now, read on to see how to cope with changing routines and changing seasons. Ah, change is in the wind.

Aloha,

Enveloping the Sun

The trees in Hawai'i are incredibly sculptural. The shower trees, the banyan trees, and the monkey pod trees are quite simply, enchanting. This eZine marks your first glimpse at two of the images in my new series of Tree Diva (spirits) watercolor paintings. The series will be available on my website soon; there are more to come.

If you live in the northern climates, and would like to help me create more beautiful Tree Divas, read on!

Pretend you're a kid again. In addition to jumping in piles of fallen leaves, do you remember the fun of ironing leaves in waxed paper?

Simply place a fallen leaf between two pieces of wax paper, set your iron on low, and iron.

Slip the ironed waxed leaves into a manila envelope and send them to me at: Patrice Federspiel, PO Box 61707, Honolulu, HI 96839-1707.

I am especially interested in maple, gingko, poplar, and oak leaves. I promise to share the results with all of you.

Habits * Rituals * Rhythms * Routines

Have you noticed that incorporating new ideas into your life, throws routine out the window? I sold my car this summer and have been car-sharing instead.

"Great!" You say, "Go green."

Yes, it is great on many levels. On other levels, let's just say it's "been interesting".

All of the daily rituals I have lived with for the past 30 years as a car-owner have been lost. This must be "good for me" because it feels so darned hard!

It can be difficult to get back "on track" once favorite rituals and habits have been changed. Fortunately I have a few good habits remaining that I can share with you. This is one of my favorites:

Habit Number One: Record your week
Taught by Aletta de Wal of Artist Career Training.

Open any size spiral notebook. With the book flat, use the left page to record your weekly to-do list.

On the right page, record all that you do each day.
All that you accomplish - whether or not the tasks you record were on your to-do list, will amaze you.

There is no right or wrong way to perform this habit. Sometimes I record my day as I move through it, other times I do so the next morning.

Either way your results will tell you where you are spending your time and where you want to be spending your time. You will also learn just how much really goes into accomplishing all that you do.

Creating Art:
a Metaphor
for Living Life

Extend Your Summer

Summer is officially over, even here on the islands, (although our weather hasn't caught on to that just yet).

Here's a tasty way for you to extend your summer just a little while longer.

For those of you who have never eaten a papaya, they are ripe when golden in color, and soft, yet firm, to the touch.

Papaya Pepper Salad

1 red bell pepper
1 green bell pepper
1 papaya
Juice from 1 lemon

Halve the papaya and discard the seeds. Cut the peppers and papaya into bite-size chunks and toss with the juice of one lemon.

This salad is both refreshing & beautiful!
