Natural flu prevention program
| |
What is it? Two injections of low dose herbal extracts and minerals and a take home package that continues to boost immunity.
Who should consider it?
If you get 3 or more colds in a year, you would likely benefit from an immune boosting program this time of year.
What is the benefit? Since it is a general immune boost - it helps your body fight the common cold as well as the flu.
Recent evidence indicates that the flu shot is on average only 56% effective.
Our program improves your immune system function instead of giving you a mixture of viral particles that may (or may not) be this year's flu bug.
Call the reception to reserve your 15 minute flu visit at 250.475.1522

Greetings!
Happy February!
It is said that the only constant in life is change, and so it can be said too of integrative health clinics. We have another new member to introduce you to, and some new offerings at the clinic to let you know about.
As well, Dr. Pam will share an interesting finding on how you can use coconut oil to help out brains affected by Alzheimer's disease or mild cognitive impairment.
Clinic News:
This month we are launching our new, 28-day intensive medically supervised detoxification program. This is not your health food store variety cleanse. It incorporates regular hydrotherapy and saunas to truly root out stored toxins. You can read more about it below. Dr. Pam gave a well received presentation at the Naturopathic Neurology Symposium this month where she spoke to over 200 naturopathic doctors, students, researchers and educators. She presented on naturopathic approaches to Alzheimer's dementia and Parkinson's disease. As you may know, Dr. Pam has spent over a year researching brain health, and is about to launch a novel assessment and treatment program based on this research.
Will Bratt, Certified Canadian Counsellor, has joined the clinic. We've included a bit about him below so you can become familiar with narrative therapy, and with Will's background and style.
You'll find a coupon at the end of this email for a 10% discount on selected heart healthy supplement purchases, now to the end of February! This is our thank you for reading our newsletter, referring your friends and family to us, and for choosing Acacia.
Take good care of yourselves and your loved ones.
Yours in Health,
Dr. E.Pamela Hutchison ND

28-day intensive medically supervised detox! Individualized intensive detoxification
| |

Was your New Year's Eve resolution to do a detox? Or was it to lose weight or just be healthier in general? Nothing beats a good detox or cleanse for jump-starting weight loss or shocking us out of our daily bad habits to get back to healthier living.
Drs Amy, Jaime and Pam have formulated a program that can be individualized to each person to meet a specific detoxification goal or need. Each person going through this program will do a much more rigorous process than what is typical of health food store detoxification products.
What is included?- A 45-minute initial meeting with your Naturopathic Doctor (existing patients only - new patients have a full 90 minute initial visit)
- Physician-grade supplementation and detoxification support
- Four, one-hour Constitutional Hydrotherapy sessions
- Eight infrared sauna sessions
- A 15-minute consultation with your Naturopathic Doctor in the 3rd week to monitor your progress.
- Recipes and support materials
What are the benefits of intensive detoxification
- Greater toxin release and removal means better results. More energy, clearer skin, less joint pain, better cognitive function and improvements of many general medical conditions.
- Because it is medically supervised, people with chronic health concerns who normally cannot do an over-the-counter detox, can do so safely.*
- Hydrotherapy and sauna add regular relaxation to the program as well as improvements to your circulation and toxin removal.
- Greater weight loss. With regular saunas, you will burn an extra 600 calories per week. Over 4 weeks, that amounts to more significant weight loss when compared to an ordinary cleanse.
You can read more about this program on our website. The cost for an existing patient is $575 and $615 for new patients - a savings of $145 compared to purchasing it all separately.
The first 5 people to participate in this program will receive an additional $40 off the program cost!
We already have patients signing up, so this additional discount won't last much longer!
*People chronic health concerns may not qualify for the program as in some cases it will not be appropriate for them.

Coconut oil and Alzheimer's disease Dr. E. Pamela Hutchison ND
| Virgin Coconut Oil and Medium Chain Triglycerides.
Perhaps one of the more novel approaches to feeding the impaired brain is to give it an alternative fuel source that bypasses the normal insulin receptor facilitated uptake of glucose. Coconut oil is 66% medium chain triglycerides, which are absorbed and dealt with differently by the digestive tract, shuttled directly to the liver and changed into ketones.
Ketones are a fuel source for the brain cells that passively pass through cell walls and enter the mitochondria (the energy "power house" of the cell) and become energy or ATP. There is a great deal of evidence that part of the dysfunction in Alzheimer's disease is a loss of the capacity of cells to uptake insulin, sometimes called "Type 3 Diabetes" These ketones become a secondary fuel source and can re-enliven marginal cells. Virgin Coconut oil is a safe and tasty was to get these medium chain triglycerides. It seems that 4 tablespoons per day is necessary to see improvements in people with active dementia, but less (2 tbsp) may be helpful for people with mild cognitive impariment. Below is an interesting news clip on the use of coconut oil by a medical doctor to treat her husband's Alzheimer's dementia.

Introducing Will Bratt Certified Canadian Counsellor
| Through my therapeutic practice, I engage in respectful, non-blaming approaches to counselling, and regard people as the experts in their own lives. People often seek out therapists when their lives start to feel like they are saturated with problems. Rather than understanding problems as fundamentally tied to the people experiencing them, I believe that problems are...well...problems! In other words, I think of problems as separate from people and I assume that people have many skills, competencies, beliefs, values, commitments and abilities that serve them in changing the influence of problems in their lives.
When I meet people, I often think of the possibilities for the direction of therapy like routes on a map. On this map, there are many paths to choose from. With every step on the therapeutic journey, new and different elements of the landscape emerge. With each new step that I take with the person consulting me, we open more avenues for change. Through therapy, you can choose where you want to go, what you consider important or vital to the life you want to live and what you might leave behind.
I hold a Master's degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of Victoria, and am a certified member in good standing with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. I am also a registered service provider with BC's Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP). I have advanced training in Narrative Therapy, and I have extensive experience working with trauma survivors and victims of sexual, physical and emotional abuse. I am interested in consulting with men, women, youth and persons who identify as LGBTQ to address any variety of problems. If you are interested in seeing Will for counselling support, he offers free 30 minute consultations for you to get a sense of whether we might work well together. You can read more about Will here on our website. |
