Issue: #15 Summer!
| July 2010 |
Greetings!
Welcome to Summer!
Take some time to enjoy the beach or the lake. This is a fabulous season to get connected to nature. A recent study showed that even 5 minutes of exercise in a green space or near water had prolonged positive effects on mood and energy! This newsletter focuses on a new therapy - IV glutathione. I am very excited about this service as it has great potential for helping people with neurological disorders, brain injury and depression. I've posted some articles and supporting info on the website here, if you wish to learn more. We also have another great article by Christine, our Registered Clinical Counsellor, information on the Family Medicine Clinic from Dr. Amy Gilchrist and a recipe for a peach smoothie to keep you cool this summer! When you eat with the seasons, you get the most out of these foods nutritionally, and when you buy local you support our local farmers while reducing the carbon footprint of food production and delivery.
Finally, we have a new member to our front desk team. Dannielle Rutledge comes with full Medical Office Assistant training and a passion for alternative medicine. She is a yoga instructor at the Yoga Shala as well!
We wish you a happy summer and these articles help you live a healthier, happier life! Be Healthy, Dr. Pamela Hutchison Director, Acacia Integrative Health
P.S. We are offering a summer deal on the infrared sauna - if you add a sauna to any visit here (massage, acupuncture, counseling, naturopathic visit, IV therapy visit....) you pay only $10 (50% off). If you have a general medical condition, be sure to ask your healthcare provider if sauna therapy is appropriate for you. |

The Therapeutic Relationship in Counselling Christine Selder, Registered Clinical Counsellor
| |
Researchers studying different ways of "doing" counselling and psychotherapy have found that no matter what approach the practitioner used there was one factor that seemed to determine success or failure. That factor was the relationship: a good connection between counsellor and client was the most consistent and powerful determinant of a positive outcome.
Given this, it seems important that you, as a client, trust your gut-feeling when you meet a prospective therapist. Is this a person you could imagine trusting? Is this someone you respect and feel like you could be comfortable with? Do you like him/her? Is this someone whom you feel will benefit you?
An effective analogy is to imagine shopping for a therapist as akin to test driving a car. Therapy is an investment you are making of your time, finances, and energy. Meeting your potential therapist prior to beginning work allows you to make an informed choice.
I believe that giving my clients the opportunity to meet or speak with me prior to entering into a therapeutic relationship is an important first step in establishing trust. I offer a free half hour consultation wherein you can ask me questions and give me an idea of the issues you would like to work on. Please note, if you are feeling overwhelmed or in crisis I do recommend booking a full session. The choice is yours.
You can make an appointment to come into the clinic or schedule a consultation over the phone. I am also interested in conducting small groups or information sessions and would be pleased to hear your topic suggestions. Please e-mail me at christine@acaciahealth.ca or call the clinic at 250-475-1522

IV Glutathione Therapy and Nervous System Health
Dr. Pamela Hutchison, ND and Clinic Director | Glutathione is a molecule made of 3 amino acids
 (glutamine, cysteine, and glycine)
that plays an important role in detoxifying free radicals produced during normal metabolism, immune system activity, and the response to external toxins. It is a key factor in liver detoxification and protection, and is important for maintaining DNA stability during inflammation. In the brain, glutathione is known to play two important roles: 1) The preservation of healthy brain cells by preventing damage due to free radical production. 2) Amino acid transport for neurotransmitter production. The most rigorous studies done on glutathione for neurological health, focus on its remarkable capacity to protect cancer patients from the neurotoxicity of their chemotherapy. A 2002 study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology looked at 52 patients in treatment for advanced colorectal carcinoma who were randomized to two groups: one group received a normal saline infusion (control) prior to their bimonthly chemotherapy (oxaliplatin), and the other received 1,500mg of reduced glutathione by IV infusion prior to their chemotherapy. Oxaliplatin is a newer chemotherapeutic drug, used mainly in colorectal cancers. It can commonly cause cold-sensitive pain and peripheral sensory neuropathy that can be uncomfortable or painful and cause early discontinuation of the treatment. In this study, they found that the group of patients receiving IV glutathione had only two incidents of neuropathy, compared with 11 in the saline group. Neurophysiological nerve tests showed that the nerve conduction in the saline group was diminished, but not in the glutathione group. In the end, glutathione appeared to protect these patients from the toxic side effects of their chemotherapy, while NOT diminishing the efficacy of the chemotherapy itself. There are additional studies showing improvements in toxicity of cisplatin (another chemotherapy agent), and improvements in quality of life in cancer patients during chemotherapy. I have posted a couple here on our website for you. Chemotherapy is an extreme example of neurological toxin stress, and glutathione shows efficacy in protecting the nerves in these situations. So what about the general wear and tear of everyday life? Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's dementia are two neurodegenerative conditions that are caused, at least in part, by low grade, chronic inflammation over a long period of time. Patients with Parkinson's disease have been found to be low in glutathione in the substantia nigra (the area of the brain most affected in this disease). Some researchers are hypothesizing that there may be a link to poor glutathione levels (even genetic predispositions to low levels) and an increase in inflammatory brain damage in these cases. Dr. Perlmutter made famous the use of IV glutathione in patients with Parkinson's disease. There is preliminary research to back up his findings, and many case studies of patients getting similar improvements to what he reports. Dr. Perlmutter, essentially, is a neurologist who started IV infusions of glutathione in his Parkinson's patients and found that some of them got remarkable improvements in function, some as soon as 30 minutes after treatment. We have posted one video on our website here that shows someone who was a very good responder to treatment. In theory, these improvements are due to the replenishment of glutathione into the substantia nigra, allowing a certain degree of return of function to the patient. Dr Perlmutter reports improvements in other neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, but the results in Parkinson's appear to be the most remarkable. One of the main problems with glutathione is that taking it orally does not facilitate increases in the nervous system. The most effective way of increasing glutathione in the brain is through IV therapy. Other substances, like N-acetyl cysteine, Vitamin C, and SAMe can be helpful, but do not achieve nearly the same levels possible through IV therapy. This is why we have begun to offer IV glutathione to our patients here at Acacia. If you are interested in this care for your loved one, or for yourself, the first step is to set up an initial consultation with Dr Hutchison. She will review your health history and your current health condition, and determine if you are a good candidate for IV glutathione therapy, then develop a treatment plan that is designed for you. Glutathione is a very promising treatment option for many neurological conditions. If you have a question, you can contact Dr Hutchison by emailing pam@acaciahealth.ca.

Summer Peach and Ginger Smoothie This smoothie is a great way to use extra peaches from the summer harvest. The sweetness of the peaches and the spiciness of the ginger provide a wonderful combination.

2 ripe peaches, halved and pits
removed 1 1/2 inch piece of fresh ginger peeled and chopped 1 1/2 cup coconut milk 2-3 tbsp of agave nectar 1 cup ice cubes
Place the peach halves, ginger, coconut milk, and agave nectar into the blender and blend on high until very smooth. Taste and add more agave if necessary.

| The Family Medicine Clinic
Dr. Amy Gilchrist, ND | The Family Medicine Clinic (FMC) is just beginning its summer term. Students from Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine in Vancouver have been making the trip over every other weekend since September to volunteer their time here at Acacia to help us provide free naturopathic care to young, low income families in Victoria. The clinic continues to be above full capacity even with the tripling of our services. Young families recently took some time to give us feedback on the effects this service has had on their lives. I thought I would share some of those comments with the Acacia community. "I could not afford to see a naturopath without this program, and if this program was not available my daughter would still be in incredible pain and discomfort. Now that she is pain free she has started making incredible progress with her fine and gross motor skills and at 2 is just pulling herself to stand and attempting to crawl and eat on her own. Her speech is improving, as well as her social skills. I attribute all of this to the assistance we received here." "I've been coming to the clinic since its conception. It has been one of the most important parts of my life aside from my family. My health is at an optimal level. I've never felt healthier. I look forward to my appointment every month. I have referred more families that I can count." "This clinic has been a lifesaver for my family. My family was constantly in and out of doctor's offices, specialists, and hospitals, but no one really listened to my concerns. At this clinic I have experienced people actually listening to my concerns and they have actually helped us. Not dismissing my concerns has been in itself incredible to me." "Never before have I experienced health care so specific to my personal needs." "When I first began visiting the clinic I was on a downward spiral of unhealthy eating habits and mental distress. I have been committed to making positive changes in my life and every visit to the clinic strengthens my goal and offers great support and resources to help bring those goals closer. With close watch and attention the doctors have been able to seek out food sensitivities, allergies and a hormone imbalance. With vitamins and supplements I have been able to gain strength emotionally and physically. I am ready to take on my life." "Overall, this project has been invaluable and precious in my life. I listen, I learn, I heal. I couldn't do it without the knowledge, care and support of this stupendous project and all of the contributors." Thank you to all the young families who took the time to let us know how you feel about the Family Medicine Clinic. We hope to continue to provide this service well into the future. To help support the Family Medicine Clinic cheques can be sent to Acacia Integrative Health (payable to Dr. Amy Gilchrist, memo: FMC). All monies collected go directly and fully to continuing this service. SPECIAL THANKS: Thank you to Cheryl Gregory, Medical Exercise Specialist, and owner and operator of BlissFit who generously donated her time and skills (and considerable energy!) to offer a 6 week bootcamp to our FMC clients - Free of Charge. As well as leading the group Cheryl went above and beyond the call of duty organizing all of the back ground details for these sessions. She even organized child minding for these sessions making it so much easier for young parents to attend and providing a much needed break for parents to concentrate on their own self care. The sessions were well attended and greatly appreciated. We feel this was such a nice compliment to our existing FMC services. Also thank you to the Crystal Pool and The Young Parents Support Network! In support of this bootcamp initiative the Crystal Pool donated space for the workout as well as staff for the child minding. YPSN provided the outreach to the young family community (as they always do for the FMC) and as well assisted in child minding. Thank you to Natural Factors! Natural Factors has taken the FMC under its wing and now provides the FMC with donations of natural health products each month. These products are in turn given out free to our young family patients. This step drastically improves the effectiveness the FMC's services. While care has always been free at the FMC the prescriptions have not - creating a limiting step in effective patient care. Last month Natural Factors donated nearly $32,000 in product. Natural factors will continue to supply us with basic products each month and will even allow special requests for specific cases. Thank you so much Natural Factors!
