CARRIAGE BARN EDUCATION AND VISITOR CENTER

Work to Commence this Spring

One of the oldest standing structures on the John Jay Homestead State Historic Site property, the 1801 Carriage Barn, will be restored and revived to become the site's Education and Visitor Center, thanks to the efforts of Friends of John Jay Homestead in cooperation with the NY State Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The contract for exterior restoration for the $1.5 million project was awarded last week after years of research, planning and fundraising. Exterior restoration construction is slated to begin in spring 2012.

The restored Carriage Barn will become the gateway for visitors to the site. Designs for the new Education and Visitor Center include an information desk; a viewing area for videos about John Jay and the site; computer stations with interactive education components, and a hands-on activity space for young learners. The facility will also include a gift shop, reading room and historic exhibits about farming and the use of horses throughout the farm's history.

SLAVERY EXHIBIT TO CLOSE IN MID-MARCH

Slaves, Slavery and the Jay Family: the Back Parlor Exhibit

Yes, February is Black History Month, but the John Jay Homestead has been exploring the stories of slavery - in New York, at the Homestead -in the Back Parlor exhibit area for the past year. While Slaves, Slavery and the Jay Family will be closing in mid-March, and the treasures that have been on display will be returned to their bookshelves, cases and archive locations, the stories we've developed will be dispersed throughout the house and fully part of our tours and programs....stories about the development of anti-slavery sentiment and tactics through the generations of Jays, and stories about the servants and slaves who lived and worked with the family. Come and visit the exhibit and see all this important content in one place, while you still can.

And then get ready for the next exhibit, opening in mid-April, about the first two generations of Jay women. We'll have wonderful and important stories for you there too.
