Casey on Spring Break in Fruita
Trips for Kids Denver kicked off the 2010 ride season with a four
day, fantastic, fun Fruita camping trip during Spring Break! TFKD
partnered with Boulder Inner City Outings and Casey Middle School to
take 12 kids to the Western Slope in search of dry trails (which we
found). One great story from our trip was seeing a boy
named "Jose" come out of his shell. He is usually very quiet and will not
talk in front of a group unless he is strongly encouraged. Over the four
days of riding, playing games, working together setting up camp and cooking meals, he became much more interactive and engaged.
A big breakthough came on day three when we staged a very fun "slow race"
with elimination rounds. It was very heart warming to see Jose get
through each round and come out the winner in a very slow final round!
We had a podium presentation with each of the top three slow racers who were warded yummy Clif Bars and posed for photographs. I believe this
positive experience will go a long way towards building his confidence. I
look forward to seeing him display this new confidence on the regular
Wednesday after school rides that TFKD hosts at the school.
