5 Ways to Help Your Child Prevent Bullying this School Year

As children head back to the classroom, now is a great time for parents and guardians to talk with kids about bullying. HOMEROOM, the official blog of the US Department of Education, offers five tips to help your child prevent bullying and to help them deal with bullying: communicate, teach them how to be more than a bystander, know policies or laws surrounding bullying, learn how to support kids involved in bullying and take an active role in anti-bullying initiatives.

Tired of the Talk and Just Want to Know the When of ACA?

Find out what is happening and when on the Affordable Care Act by checking out the HealthCare.gov website.  Many provisions, like increasing access to services at home and in the community, have already taken place and are easy to identify in this user friendly timeline.

Why is My Child Defiant or Explosive?

Dedicated to the lady at Walmart with the screaming kid and all of us "good parents" who have been that lady at Walmart.

One of the most difficult behaviors for parents or teachers to address is explosive behavior, a child who has little control over emotions and "melts down" in the classroom or at home.  It is frustrating, it is embarrassing, it is anxiety producing, it causes intense emotions in ourselves.  Parents agonize over why it happens or what they did wrong?  Often the parents are blamed or judged by bystanders in stores, family members, friends, or school staff.  Read more here.

10 Basic Steps in Special Education

This HANDOUT from our partners at NICHCY is a brief overview and an excellent place to start understanding the process.  Once you have the big picture of the process, it's easier to understand the many details under each step.  Also, make sure you attend a Families Together Team Empowerment Conference (TEC, see Upcoming Events sidebar) in your area for an intense understanding of the special education process.

There is Still Time to Voice Your Concerns

Public comment is open until September 21 to voice your opinion on KanCare.  Your voice is important as the Center for Medicaid and Medicaid Services (CMS) considers approving the State's waiver, and your voice will also encourage additional safeguards to protect services.  Click here to comment or read and support other's comments.
