Interventions for Problem Eaters

The Sensory Processing Disorder Foundation is privileged to present Kay A. Toomey, PhD, Pediatric Psychologist, teaching her internationally renowned intervention for problem feeders.  The Sequential Oral Sensory (S.O.S) Approach to Feeding is a family-centered, transdisciplinary program for assessing and treating children with weight/growth problems from birth to 18 years.  It integrates postural, sensory, motor, behavioral/ learning, medical and nutritional factors to comprehensively evaluate and manage children with feeding/growth problems.

Good Grades: Does My Child Still Need Specialized Instruction?

Question:  I spend hours helping my child with homework each night. She still struggles and is getting frustrated. I keep asking the school to evaluate her but the principal says her grades are too good. What should I do?

 

Answer: First, IDEA states that a child does not have to fail or be retained to be considered for special education and related services. 34 C.F.R. �300.101(c).

April is Autism Awareness Month

The number of children estimated to have autism continues to rise, with a new government report out Thursday indicating that the condition now affects 1 in 88 kids. That's a 23 percent rise over the previous estimate of 1 in 110, which was released in 2009. Read more

 

A Glimpse into Our Past 

1982Families Together was founded by Chris Curry and the first Family Enrichment Weekend was held in Lawrence with a focus on bringing families together to share stories and gain support.

1983Family Enrichment Weekends continued and the era of garage sales, bingo, and bake sales began.

1984The first Family Enrichment Weekend was held in western Kansas.

1985The University of Kansas received an Innovative Projects grant which provided the opportunity to develop parent assistance services through Families Together.

1986Families Together received a three year grant from the Federal Department of Education to establish a Parent Training and Information (PTI) Center in Kansas. The center was located in Topeka.

1987Families Together was awarded a contract from the Department of SRS, Division of Mental Health and Retardation Services, to develop a respite care training curriculum with emphasis on families of children with emotional disturbance. Five Family Enrichment Weekends were held across the state.

1988A staff of four conducted EIGHT Family Enrichment Weekends across the state of Kansas!

1989Families Together received renewal of PTI grant for three additional years.

1990Initial steps were taken to establish what is now known as the Parent-to-Parent Program. Parents were asked to volunteer their names to be on a list to be contacted by other parents of children with similar disabilities. Other highlights of the year included a contract with KSDE to provide Education Advocate Workshops and the establishment of bilingual workshops.
