Seclusion & Restraint Bill to be Heard March 8

House Bill 2444 will be reviewed by the Senate Education Committee on Thursday, March 8, 2012 at 1:30.  If this is an important topic to you, please contact Darla at the Topeka Center to discuss what actions you can take.  Your personal stories make the difference! Click here to review the bill.

Mental Health & Early Childhood

According to the 2010 Census and current research, between 17,000 and 61,000 Kansas children age 0-5 may have a mental health disorder that affects their development.  In Kansas, early childhood mental health services are delivered through a complex system of early childhood and mental health organizations, as well as providers of child care, health care and child welfare.  This special report, put forth by the Kansas Health Institute, outlines information on the types of early childhood mental health services in Kansas and the availability of services in regions of the state.

KU Study on Female Development

Menstruation is a topic that under the best circumstances is difficult to talk about. For our young women with disabilities it is that much more difficult and challenging a subject to problem-solve. For all females the hope is to help them be as independent as possible and be treated with respect and dignity.  The University of Kansas is interested in learning about the menstrual impact for females with mild and moderate developmental disabilities.  Take the survey by clicking here.

Intellectual Disabilities and Aging

Did you know that in 1929 the life expectancy for a person with Down Syndrome was nine years?  By 1986, the life expectancy had risen to 47 years.  Today, the life expectancy is approximately 70 years.  In April 2012, the Sedgwick County Developmental Disability Organization will be partnering with the Sedgwick County Department on Aging to bring together Aging and Developmental Disabilities (DD) professionals for a day of learning on the topic of Aging and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD). Click here for details

Costly Dental Destination

Over 17,500 visits are made to Kansas emergency rooms each year by people with dental pain. The only services that can be provided in the emergency room are prescriptions for antibiotics and/or pain medication.  Check out the Pew Children's Dental Campaign report that mirrors the message Oral Health Kansas has been sharing: people who experience extreme dental pain resort to emergency rooms when they do not have a way to pay for a dentist or when they cannot find a dentist.
