 Families Together, Inc. Monday Memo

Make a Difference Monday

One in 5 Kansas families includes a child or young adult member who has a disability or special health care need. These family members bring challenges and joys appreciated by loved ones and Families Together Staff.  Our staff are all members of families that include persons with disabilities. Your donation will make it possible for us to support more families with emotional and practical support.  Click here to find out how you can make a difference.

Free Seizure Toolkit

The Epilepsy Foundation has recently released "Epilepsy & My Child Toolkit: A Resource for Parents with a Newly Diagnosed Child." This book includes an informational DVD, as well as information about managing seizures and living with epilepsy. These toolkits have been made available through a HRSA grant with the KU Center for Telemedicine & Telehealth, which provides a variety of services and resources for youth, families, and health professionals. Also included are forms to share with your doctor that help parents track seizures and medications. Please contact your nearest Families Together center for a free copy.

Kansas Youth Leadership Forum Searching for Applicants & Volunteers

The Kansas Youth Leadership Forum for Students with Disabilities (KSYLF) is currently searching for motivated young leaders to attend the twelfth annual forum held June 18 - 23, 2012 at Washburn University in Topeka. We are also searching for adults to serve as volunteers for the week of the KSYLF.

All students who are interested in attending the KSYLF must meet the following criteria:

  • reside in Kansas
  • have a disability as defined with the Americans with Disabilities Act be in the 11th or 12th grade as of January 15, 2012
  • have demonstrated leadership potential or interest in school and the community

There will be no cost for students who are selected to attend. All lodging, food, and accommodations are paid for through KSYLF funds. Accommodations such as personal care attendants, sign language interpreters, large print or Braille materials, and other accommodations will be provided for those delegates who need them.  Students must fill out an application that will be reviewed through a competitive selection process. About 30 - 35 delegates will be selected to attend. The delegate application deadline for the 2012 Forum is January 15, 2012.  Past volunteers, KSYLF alumni, and new volunteers are encouraged to apply! Volunteer applicants must fill out our application form, as well as two background checks, and send to the KYEA office. Volunteer applications are due by February 5, 2012.  Visit KYEA's website for more information.

U.S. Education Department Announces New Measure to Safeguard Student Privacy

Last week, the U.S. Department of Education announced new regulations to safeguard student privacy while giving states the flexibility to share school data that can be helpful in judging the effectiveness of government investments in education.  This measure will help FERPA violators be held accountable for their actions while helping states and school plan for the future and see how graduates did post secondary.  Click here for the full regulation.
