Families Together, Inc. Monday Memo

Teaching Your Child to Become Independent with Daily Routines

The Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CSEFEL) has published a new Family Tool to help parents and caregivers understand what self-help skills can be expected from young children and to provide tips for helping children learn how to become more independent with daily routines.

Choosing Your Battles: Targeting Behavior Problems Worth Fighting

Children sometimes present parents with so many opportunities for behavioral correction that, if they pursued every one, children would never leave the time-out chair. How do parents let them know the rules are important, and still use discretion when it comes to discipline?

Making Life Easier for Parents & Caregivers

Making Life Easier is a series designed for parents and caregivers. The series of tipsheets contains valuable information on how to make often challenging events easier to navigate, and even enjoyable, for both caregivers and children. The topics include: bedtime and napping, running errands and diapering.

Resources for Parents

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released two new publications for parents as part of its "Learn the Signs, Act Early" program, which seeks to improve early identification of children with autism and other developmental disabilities. The booklet "Milestone Moments" includes milestone checklists and tips to help parents support their child's development from 2 months to 5 years. The second publication, a brochure called "Track Your Child's Developmental Milestones," includes a checklist of key milestones from 6 months to 4 years and a message for parents about what to do if developmental concerns arise.

Younger Medicare Beneficiaries Face Obstacles to Medigap Coverage

Medicare beneficaries under age 65 confront often insurmountable obstacles when they want to purchase Medigap coverae, an important issue left unaddressed by the recent health care reform legislation.
