Financial Resource for Families Raising Children who have Special Needs

When your child is diagnosed with a disability, it can be overwhelming-emotionally and financially-on you, and perhaps your child and family as well. You realize, maybe suddenly, that you must change or modify plans for your child's future. Even the most stable of families face financial challenges. Yet, in caring for your child with special needs, those challenges can make for urgent situations.

Autism Waiver Funding at Risk

Currently the Kansas Autism Waiver only has funding for 45 children. There are over 250 children on the waiting list. Sadly, many of these children will "age out" of eligibility before receiving services. more information

Attention Middle School & Junior High Parents!

An online survey is being conducted to better understand the perceptions of and satisfaction with the transition services your child receives in middle school or junior high school, FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE! Your child must be in 6th - 9th grade and currently receiving special education services. After you complete the entire survey (approximately 20 minutes), you will be prompted to enter a raffle to win one of SIX $25 gift certificates to Wal-Mart. Click here for the survey

KU Assessment of Family Engagement in Assistive Technology Considerations

You are invited to participate in an important study that seeks to better understand how families are engaged in the process to identify and implement assistive technology in the lives of their student.  This study is being facilitated by Dr. Sean J. Smith, a parent of a 4th grader with an intellectual disability and regular presenter at the Topeka's Together We Can Learn Families Together Conference and Ali Bahr, an aspiring teacher and current graduate student.  link to the survey

How to have a Production IEP Meeting

This is not a comprehensive list. I'm not a teacher, although I do have a teaching degree. The advice I give is based on my experience as a parent, having two children (ages 4 and 14) who have IEPs and the dozens of IEP meetings I have prepared for and attended. Over the years I've made plenty of mistakes, but through them learned a lot. I now go into IEP meetings with much more confidence and competence and with far less fear than I did going in to the first one.
