Celebrating Progress and Learning Together |
Imagine it's 1967 and you're back in second grade, the same grade your son is in now. Like your son you're a whiz at math but you struggle mightily when reading a story or writing a simple sentence. Unlike your son, you would not have had the benefit of any special education services. You would've likely suffered through a difficult education experience, struggling to advance to the next grade.
Now imagine it's 1970 and your child has Down syndrome. What educational services would your child have access to? Like more than four million other children who had disabilities in the 1970s, your child would have received little or no meaningful educational services. Not until 1975, with the passage of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act, did federal law mandate that "handicapped students" receive a Free Appropriate Public Education in the Least Restrictive Environment.
Join us in Topeka for the Together We Can Learn Conference as we celebrate 35 years of progress in educating students with disabilities. You will gain information and resources and have an opportunity to network with other families and professionals who care for and about students who have disabilities.

States Expected to Seek Special Education Funding Waivers |
For the second year in a row, the federal government is bracing for more states to request a pass on requirements that they hold special education spending harmless as they struggle to balance their budgets, leaving school districts to find ways to meet all students' needs with less money. Edweek |
