Expanding Opportunities
One year ago, Connie Zienkewicz, the Executive Director of Families Together, Inc. was asked to attend a meeting with other state agency officials and organization which serve young children with disabilities.  The meeting was an opportunity to create state-wide interagency efforts to include children with disabilities in the service delivery systems in Kansas which serve all children.  Among the other agencies represented were:  Kansas Inservice Training System (KITS), Kansas SRS, Kansas Dept. of Health and Environment Child Development Division, Kansas State Dept of Education, and Head Start.

Family-to-Family Health Information CenterFamily to Family Health Center Logo
In June, we announced to you that Families Together, Inc. had been awarded a grant from Maternal and Child Health Bureau to serve the families in Kansas as a Family-to-Family Health Information Center (F2F).  Three staff members are available to assist families of children with special health care needs to become good advocates for their children.  Through this grant, Families Together, Inc. will increase educational training available to Kansas families of Children/Youth with Special Health Care Needs (CYSHCN).  The staff members of the F2F Center will offer training to leaders in ethnic/minority communities to communicate the availability of services through F2F Centers.  Look for  information in our newsletter and website about topics of particular interest to CYSHCN families. Family Story
Kermit and dog   Kermit was 2 years old when he was diagnosed with autism.  As parents we were devastated that our baby was not "normal".  My husband withdrew into depression and I buried myself in books and the internet searching for any and all information about the disorder.  I knew nothing about autism.  I wanted to know it all.  I wanted to know how to best help my son.  I wanted to understand his mind.  I wanted answers.
HEALTHY MOUTH, HEALTHY BABY RIGHT FROM THE START!
Improving oral health for children with special health care needs calls for everyone's support, right from the start.  Parents, especially Mom, can begin Day Number 1, looking in her newborn's mouth.  We always hear parents tell about counting babies' toes and fingers.  The same inquisitiveness is equally important to look in the baby's mouth.

Thank You, check out our website for more information!!

Sincerely,
