This is a long newsletter...enjoy!

If you are a client at Clear Rock, please read the last section for the snow policy, schedule stuff, and an opportunity to win a prize.

The emails I received from you all this week were amazing.  Thank you for sharing.  You are an incredible group of women.

And here is the recipe for those delightful whole food plant based POWERBALL BITES:

1 cup natural peanut butter

1/2 cup honey or agave nectar

1 cup of whole wheat oats

1/2 cup chopped almonds (or other nuts)

1/2 cup chopped no sugar added dried fruit of your choice (cherries, cranberries, etc.)

3 TBSP protein powder (optional)

Mix together the peanut butter and honey (either by hand or with your mixer). Stir in the oatmeal and remaining ingredients. Roll into about 1" balls and refrigerate. Can be stored sealed for several weeks.  ~ 100 calories each depending on how large you make them.

The three recipes that were served at the movie are attached below in Client Corner.

Have a great week!

Motivation
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Which of these are truer for you?
I do exactly what I say I will do.
or
I really want to lose weight and I really want to get healthy but I never seem to stick with it long enough to get there. Something in me rebels.
It is very hard to meet goals that require long term commitment and dedication. We tend to sabotage ourselves over and over. Why is that?
I believe the battle is between feeling good right now versus feeling good in the long run. Financial health is a good example. It requires smart investments and responsible handling of your money right? But then we see an amazing pair of shoes and although we can't afford them, we buy them on credit. It's a wonderful quick hit of deliciousness, right?; those new shoes. But then the bill comes, and the payment is high. There is interest to pay and along with it comes the feeling of being trapped. Not enough money to pay, the balance carries forward. Enslavement to credit card debt can lead to feeling bad about ourselves, we long to feel better, we long for freedom, and then we see that beautiful new coat on sale. You see the cycle.
Physical health and wellness is the same. I want to be at my healthy body weight. I don't want any of the metabolic diseases. But it requires smart investments and responsible handing of your body, right? But then there is temptation; something I know is not good for me and doesn't contribute to my best life but it feels so good to eat it. I can't resist so I do. Yum! Then the bill comes and the payment is high. Too much high calorie food, not enough clean whole food; I feel trapped. The balance carries forward. Enslavement to high calorie processed foods leads to feeling bad about myself. I want to feel better, I long for freedom but I really need some comfort so I eat something else. Yum!
I didn't begin to get free until I saw a radical image. I would see myself take a rubber tube, tie it around my upper arm, get my needle out, get my drug out, fill the syringe then inject it into my vein with an ahhh of relief. Now I have never injected heroin or anything else into my arm, but I could see how I was using. I was using food to sooth a feeling. I was using food to fill a void. In my life I have (over)used a lot of things for comfort and to fill the big empty space. Food. Alcohol. Drugs. Men. Shopping. Work. Internet. It is an experience we all share. What I had to learn was that I could stop using for temporary relief and start digging for the root of the problem.
There is a battle in us all; our desire for instant gratification versus our dream of long term health and wholeness. Just knowing that this battle is going on and recognizing that it is common to all of us is an important breakthrough. We somehow then have to learn to walk this fine line between the need to live for today while at the same time investing in and planning for our future. I don't know about you but this is a tough one for me.
Have you ever heard this quote?
"Life is not a journey to the grave with intentions of arriving safely in a pretty well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming ... WOW! What a ride."
That is much more my tendency so I have to be careful or I can end up living totally for the moment without giving enough thought to the long term consequences. I've gotten myself in bondage more than once in my life this way. Smoking, debt, being overweight, bad relationships; all these things are outcomes of preferring the quick hit over the long term freedom that comes with taking care of yourself and making responsible decisions. It's easy to see it in smokers or women that date bad boys. It's easy to understand what you are doing to yourself if you run up unmanageable debt. The eating is the tough one to really see because the consequences are slow and insidious. But there is a slow loss of freedom and if you have experienced it you know exactly what I am talking about. You don't have as much fun shopping for clothes. You lose feeling good about yourself in that delicious way women should get to feel. You lose confidence. Then you lose physical abilities.  You wish for and long for the freedom and peace that comes with losing weight but it just never comes.
Ready for the truth? The quick hits are LIES. They are the counterfeit fillers for the real deal. You want happiness; it doesn't come from eating something yummy. It comes from making smart investments and taking good care of yourself. I comes from finding balance in living for today while investing in tomorrow.  I finally saw that all my drug hits with that imaginary needle in my arm were just making me an addict, not making me happy. I was doing whatever felt good, but I had little joy. I wasn't satisfied, I wasn't at peace and I wasn't healthy. You can make a different choice.
I really like pizza. But I like having a good report from the kidney doctor better.
I love ice cream. But I love feeling good about myself even more.
I enjoy steak. But watching my cholesterol drop 46 points was much more fulfilling.
I liked smoking. But I love that I conquered an addiction.
Donuts and bagels are really good. But losing 45 pounds and keeping it off is way better.
Wine is very relaxing. However, peace of mind is life changing.
Pasta and bread are tasty. But being able to wear whatever I want feels delicious.
Once you decide what is really important to you, the choices get easier. Once I was clear on my deepest reason for wanting to be at a healthier weight, I was able to stick with good choices more often. Once I knew deep in my heart that feeling good about myself was one of life's most precious gifts, I became much less likely to sabotage everything I was working on with a binge or a string of bad days. Nothing tastes nearly as good as feeling good about yourself feels. Nothing. And I promise, if I can make these changes then you can too. I really, truly believe that you can. You will just have to trust me for now when I tell you I don't miss a thing and every change I've made was worth it. Then one day you will see for yourself and I hope I am there to see you smile, all lit up, in your full glory.
Now get moving.
"I decided I am not eating meat today.  Not sure what will happen, but today is today and it is going to be meat free. The dairy would be harder for me to eliminate than the meat I think.  But we'll see how it goes.  If it's just less than what I ate previously that would probably help.  I go plenty of days without eating any plant based foods at all."
- A brave step! One step at a time, you are doing great.
 "I am sure your event went well last night. That is a very nice thing for you to do for your clients.  If you get a chance, please send me the recipes.  While I am still eating meat, I find that I am eating more and more fruit and veggies, so some new meatless dishes would be very much appreciated."
 Thanks so, so much!!  These recipes look great - I know I have seen them in your newsletters, but to print them all at once is great!"
- Let me know how you like them. Remember to make them your own.
Power Bars
Veggie Frittata
Veggie Bowl
 "Thanks for a good tasting, educational, and totally inspiring event! I can't stop thinking about the movie; spending a lot of time on the research and how the two [doctors] came to their conclusions was powerful stuff as well as highlighting individuals' stories. My next goal is to switch out my dairy Greek yogurt for soy Greek yogurt. Thanks for the great dinner; I'll be making the veggie bowl for my week's meals. I am thinking I'll allow myself the chips as well but I'll repackage them when I get the bag from the store."
- Perfect. Thanks for attending! I agree; powerful stuff.
"Workouts this week have been really hard but seem to have given good results; I do feel stronger. My watch said I had used 610 calories on Wed, but I'm not sure it's correct. I was on the treadmill a fair amount prior to class and my heart rate was in the 150s and 130s during the workout, but even so---that's a lot of calories."
- That is absolutely correct! Your extra cardio warm up cranked up your calorie burn for class. Good work, keep it up.
"Thank YOU!  I really believe we were [at the showing of Forks Over Knives] for a reason.  Even though I was negligent in my newsletter reading God is faithful and brought me to this information. As you understand the timing could not have been more critical.  We were totally inspired and I'm so grateful. I plan to spend the weekend reading and grocery shopping.  We are ready to go "whole hog"...perhaps that's not a good phrase for a plant based diet! ;-) Anyway, wish us luck and I should have a progress report [next week].  Meanwhile any other help you can give us is much appreciated.  We'll be a good test case for your class.  Fascinating stuff."
- Fantastic! I am so happy you felt empowered and inspired. I am here for you, anything you need.
 "Hey Sue! What an awesome film! I am still processing. Thanks for the recipes!!"
"Thanks for the great workout today! I think [my friend] really enjoyed it. I was glad to introduce her to such a high caliber workout with a personal touch. I don't know what she will end up doing, but at least she knows there is more to offer than just the "urban active" scene. I just want to see her succeed at her goals."
- You are a good friend. Thank you so much for the referral.
"Last year at this time I was wondering what I could do for myself to help me through the winter months. Love to walk, however the ice has not been kind to my wrists! My condo has euchre, knitting and many other activities. They just were not what I was looking for. I needed a fitness class but big gyms are not for me, so what's left? Then I saw an ad in the paper for Clear Rock, sounds good I thought. I will check it out. WOW! I started with core strengthening class 1 day a week. Loved it, although it was difficult since I had never done anything like this before. That class lead to personal training which by summer took me to taking 2 classes, filling in most other days with 3.5 miles of walking. The women in the class are some of the nicest I have ever had the pleasure to be with. We share the same goals and it truly is great. Sue, our trainer is superb! She demands the best and makes you want to do your best. It's not just a class to attend anymore, it's become a huge part of my life. I could go on and on, but enough about me. If you are having the same thoughts as I had last year, give Clear Rock a try. Did I mention this all came to me at 68 while having one of the most difficult years of my life? My Mother passed away, my husband was very ill (doing very well now). There were days I thought I would never make it through ,but I pushed myself to go to class and I credit Sue, the women in class, and the fitness for helping me see that good days were ahead. Will keep working to improve, and who knows how many other goals I can achieve. Thanks for a great year!"
- You, my lovely friend, are an inspiration to us all. Thank you for walking into Clear Rock a year ago and bringing your light to all of us. You are a joy. On your 70th birthday, we are going to have a big party and you can show everyone how much weight you can lift!! There are no limits on what you can achieve.
 "Thanks for the encouragement!"
"Sue, got the Newsletter and printed it. Wow, being away 25 days is way too long!  This year I'm printing out each of your newsletters and putting them in a 3 ring binder.  I've basically decided to "Just Do It"!!!  READY TO ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!"
- Welcome back. I love your fire! Keep it lit.
"Sue, I am so sorry for my repeated absence.  Over the last 2 months, I have been spending lots of time getting ready for my move to my new home. I am disappointed that I left without getting one more chance to see you and the Circuit girls. There are almost no words that I can write that will really convey how much you have help me, changed me, and inspired me.  My life is so different now than it was a year ago when we met.  I feel so much stronger and more capable, younger and powerful.  Thank you for making such a difference for me.  I will be finding a new trainer tomorrow and will keep up on both my training and running.  I am going to try for a half marathon this year. Please keep me on your weekly list for your newsletter and I will send pics when I can. Thank you again for everything."
- We are going to miss you so much!! Good luck and many blessings on your move and your new home. I loved working with you. You bring such joy to everyone around you. Go get 'em on your half marathon training! We're rooting for you every step of the way.
 "I just have to laugh at myself how can I be so quick to change my mind when I hear "weight loss" even though deep inside I know what they're saying is not true. So glad that I have you to quickly un-brainwash me."
- Remember the truth. No quick fixes. No secrets to weight loss. Hard work. Dedication. Healthy food. Exercise. Consistency.
"Thank you Sue!  You are always right on the page that I need to be on...THANK YOU! GOD BLESS YOU!"
"Your best newsletter yet!  I love you woman."
"Good morning, Sue. I read every word of this newsletter. Fantastic. I never saw such a lot of truths brought together into one inspirational place. Here's a new one to add to the motivations: under my almost perfectly vegan diet, and with your exercise regimen, I have recovered (not completely but up from 0%) something I lost probably 30 years ago: my sense of smell! Have you heard of that before as an effect of diet and exercise? Bless you."
- I have not heard that before, but you are the 2nd person to mention it this week! I am coming to believe that much of what was lost can be recovered through nutrition and movement. What a miracle!
"Over the weekend, I made the bars, my son loves them."
"Wanted to let you know that we picked up the [Forks Over Knives] book on Friday as well as Dr. Esselstyn's Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease.  I spent Saturday morning reading recipes and making a grocery list and I'm happy to report after 2 hours in Kroger I came home stocked for some serious changes in the kitchen.  Last night we had "very quick black bean chili" from page 228 and today I made your protein bars after we ate our leftovers for lunch.  I'm thinking veggie stuffed peppers for supper or black bean oatmeal burgers with sweet potato oven baked "fries" for dinner. I think we're off to a good start...stay tuned!"
- Wow!!  Can I come over for dinner?  Way to make a change and try something different. Impressive!
 "How'd the movie go? I hope well! I enjoyed my steak and wild boar that night. I gained 30 pounds last year. I figure if I keep going at that rate, in 10 years I'll weigh close to 500 pounds!"
- Stop it you silly woman.
*Please change from outdoor shoes or boots into your workout shoes at the door. Wet shoes make for unsafe workouts and salt is very hard on floors and equipment. Please don't let your workout shoes out in the snow.
*Help me to be a great neighbor and please avoid parking on the East side of the building (closest to Park Meadow Rd). There is much more room for us on the South side, especially since the building across the lot is vacant. Thank you!
*I am having a free trial Circuit class this Monday, January 23rd at 7:00 PM. If you always wanted to try it, or used to take it and are thinking about returning, come to class.
*Due to increasing demand, I am now offering "Guys" workout twice a week. If the man in your life is looking for a place to exercise that is not the typical big gym experience, he can sign up for Wednesdays at 6:00 PM and/or Saturdays at 8:00 AM. There is very limited space so please email me if you have an interested guy. He can use sessions right from your card.  But remember, this is your time and your place.
*I need some reviews on my Google Local page to help other women over 40 find Clear Rock. If you are inclined, please click this link and then select the Write a Review button.
*Clear Rock Fitness has a Facebook page. I would love to use it to give you updates throughout the week, tips, recipes, etc. Please "LIKE" the Clear Rock page.
