Motivation
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Obstacles are mighty forces, especially around the holidays.
I personally find it almost impossible to stand in a kitchen where chips and dips are laid out in front of me without munching endlessly. Especially if I have a cocktail in my hand. I find it equally difficult to have one plate of food on Thanksgiving. It's just so good!
It is a challenge for me to get my workouts in consistently when there are other things I am being invited to attend that conflict with my usual workout times.
When my time is pressed by shopping, cooking, baking, wrapping, decorating, and all the other things that need done around this time of year, it seems reasonable to just put everything fitness and health related on hold and put all my energy into the to-dos of the season. There is only so much time in each day and so much energy left to conjure up the will power needed to resist cookies that are everywhere. Cookies are everywhere!
But I know what happens if I do this. The reason I know what happens is because this is what I did for many years. I decided it took too much energy to keep up fitness over the holidays so I gave myself a free pass and took a mental break from it all.
If only our bodies took the break with us, but they don't. What I learned was if I took the holiday free pass, I woke up out of a sugar coma in early January feeling absolutely horrible about myself. There is a reason marketing of fitness services and products goes crazy at the beginning of the year. They know how we feel and are exploiting us because we are so desperate to feel better we will try anything.
I believe commitment is stronger than obstacles.
I can make a commitment to keep up my healthy lifestyle right through the holidays. I can stay motivated and inspired to do so because I know the pain and self loathing when I don't. I refuse to do that to myself ever again. Can you say that with me? I refuse to do that to myself ever again.
I know it takes extra planning and being very organized. I know we're all tired and overwhelmed. But close your eyes and take a deep breath. Remember what it felt like to gain five, six, seven pounds over the holidays. Remember what it did to your spirit. Remember how you felt about yourself.
Now take another deep breath and envision yourself stronger and healthier than ever this January. Picture how you will feel about yourself. Allow yourself to feel that strength, that confidence, the joy of sticking with this even when it got really difficult. Then make the commitment. Then make it again. Every hour of every day if you have to so none of us ever has to feel that bad about ourselves again. Now get moving.
"I just wanted to tell you my workout was the best for my core! I'm feeling it today-not a bad sore-but a tightness in my "core"! I liked trying the side plank so much, I ordered an Airex balance pad on line tonight! I figured I can practice in between classes with my side plank and try and get more strength in my core-goal to have my legs straight! I feel inspired!" (Love it! - Sue)
"The newsletter was exactly the inspiration I needed. I'm feeling hopeful. I've done a good job of watching my portions and not snacking randomly. I feel more in control and it feels good!"
"Thanks for today. You said a number of things that will really help me. I think I have a lot of messed up, black and white thinking. I stopped myself from mindlessly popping a small piece of a chocolate bar in my mouth this afternoon...I will celebrate small successes."
"Instead of giving in, and giving up -- I've adopted the "onward I go" attitude...thanks for that. It's the relative of 'now get moving'."
"Thank you for this newsletter! I admire anyone that can open up and share their struggles. It makes me stronger, it makes me feel like I am not the only one out there that is struggling! I believe you are right "Defaults"...I always go back to bad habits. I need to fight that voice in my head and tell myself I know I can find ways to make smart choices without feeling like it's a chore! Thank you Sue & friends for these inspiring newsletters week after week. I read your newsletter so many time during the week. It truly gives me strength that I'm not alone!"
"I had such a great week, I cooked almost every night and was able to get out and walk once this week. I'm looking forward to going into Thanksgiving week. I went grocery shopping and bought items to make smart dishes to take to my sister's house."What brand/type of heart monitor do you recommend? (I recommend the Polar Women's FT4. It measures your calories based on age, weight, sex and heart rate and it is designed to not cross frequencies with others wearing a monitor. It is a chest strap and wrist monitor. They have them at Road Runner Sports in Worthington if you are looking for somewhere local to purchase. - Sue) |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I wasn't sure what to make today but I had the usual staples so I started with that. Non stick spray in a pan with a large chopped onion and minced garlic (lots of it). Add chopped broccoli (entire bunch), zucchini, squash, red/yellow/green peppers and let cook for about 10 minutes.
I took half of the veggie mixture and added it to egg whites and crumbled feta cheese. Poured in a baking dish, sprinkled with parmesan cheese and put it in the oven at 350 for an hour. Crustless quiche ready for the week.
I took the other half and added a can of organic black beans, low sodium diced tomatoes, a cup of frozen corn and 2 oz. sliced/ browned turkey sausage. Added some spices, simmered for 15 minutes, and have plenty for the week. |
