Motivation
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I hear "I've always wanted to do a half marathon" quite often.  It's one of those bucket list things that calls to certain people and the pull is strong.  What else would make anyone line up on Broad Street at 7:00 in the morning with thousands of other people to conquer such a distance by foot?
For me, the motivation is clear.  I use the half and full marathon to put an exclamation mark on the changes I've made.  It's my way of standing up tall and saying to my past, the old temptations, the old way of being that I am a new person.  I got to start over and I am never going back.
This all comes together on the day of the event, but the work is in the training.  It is hard to spend Saturday mornings doing long walks.  It is hard finding the time to get the walks in during the week.  It takes giving up time for others, it takes giving up sleep, and it takes learning to move even when you don't feel like it.
Do you know the feeling of finishing what you started?  It is one of the most satisfying feelings in life.  One of the things I love the most about the half marathon is that you get a Finisher Medal.  I think that is really important and is the perfect symbol of the journey you take when you start training and stick with it.
Did any of you see the photo in the Dispatch of the three women that were the last three finishers?  They got the same exact medal as the top three finishers.  I don't know about you, but I am wildly inspired by women like that who, despite being last, are doing it anyway.  You go girls!
If you have never gone downtown for the race and are lacking motivation or inspiration in your life, get down there.  You will see wheelchair participants doing the full marathon.  You will see people in their 70's and 80's going for it.  We saw a visually impaired runner with his running guide.  (WOW!)  We saw service men and women in full gear.  We saw a man who was carrying a wood frame on his back that held POW-MIA flags.  I saw a volunteer at a water stop with a walker.
I cannot imagine leaving there uninspired.  Not necessarily to walk or run in the marathon.  I know it is not for everyone.  What is your marathon?  What is it that takes you out of your comfort zone and your daily routine to change your life?  Whatever it is, get started.  Right now.  Take the journey and get your Finisher Medal, whatever that looks like.  You will improve your life in the process, and probably quite a few other people's as well.
Now get moving.
Can you recommend a brand/type of heart rate monitor? I want to get one this weekend."  (I recommend the Polar FT4 for Women - Sue)
"I felt really good after last night; my pectorals didn't hurt this time, and I was far less nauseated, so it's all good...looking forward to tomorrow night and having 2 sessions in one week."
"It [the ½ marathon] was even better for me since I crossed the line with my 2 daughters !!! The whole day was great !!!! I am so happy I did this ...it was a big accomplishment for me... I had always wanted to walk a Marathon when I was 50 and wasn't in shape or had the resolve to do it so I feel very accomplished at doing the half marathon at 62. I used to tell my Mom when she was in her 70's, keep moving but understand your limitations so you don't injure yourself. I think I would do another ½ marathon , but no desire to do the 26.2. After doing this I have a lot of respect for those who do finish either the ½ or whole marathon. I love my medal !!! and the people were great after you finished saying "good job" and "way to go" and all that.  I did feel as though someone had slipped lead weights in my shoes for the last mile!!  I did sleep a lot as you said we would, and continued to rest on Monday as well. I think the times were great!  Thanks for the encouragement and help and "tips" and I will always remember the day I got my ½ marathon medal."
"Thank you for all the training. I felt so much stronger this year than I did last year. It was a perfect day!"
"I am delightfully sore today; I thought I would say that first since it is always good to smile first thing in the morning.  I also wanted to put into writing the saga of my beautiful dress purchased three years ago for my nieces wedding.  Didn't fit, but I kept it thinking I'm going to lose weight.  Well, three years later and thanks to you I wore it last Saturday to my Godchild's wedding.  I was so happy!  Thank you, thank you!"
"I hope you are recovering well from the marathon. It was fun! What a perfect day. I was so impressed with how organized everything was and how supportive the crowds and volunteers were. At first, I had a hard time tossing my water cups to the side of the road, but I got over it.  It was nice spending the summer with you. I appreciate your help and advice all along."
"I am really enjoying my classes with you and I really want to keep up the good work! :)"
"I already miss working out and can't believe I would ever say such a thing."
"I will definitely be at circuit tomorrow night (go easy on me)!!! HA!!!   I lost 4 lbs...and that was with lots of eating!  All we did was walk!  Those French people are not FAT!"
"I have lost 22 pounds and am eating healthy!  I work out 3-4x/week and walk occasionally on the off days.  Enjoying golf, my grandkids and a new dress size! :)   Your encouragement in the beginning was part of my journey, so I appreciate the kick-start you gave me!"
"Did you say at some point, that you had a map of the route we do at Highbanks? I really enjoy that walk but even after all the times I did it, I don't feel confident that I could figure out the route on my own.  I am hoping to keep doing that route on the weekends if I can.  (They have a map at the Nature Center.)"
