A Quick "Nuts & Bolts"
Power Tip

April 23, 2012
Greetings!

Are you organizationally challenged and ready for change? Identifying where you are on the path to change will give you insight throughout the process. There are basically 5 phases in the process. You can shift forward and backwards between the phases. You can even straddle two phases at the same time. Change is not a direct path from beginning to end. It is more like a journey through hills and valleys.

Phase 1 - Initial rumblings - not ready to do anything, but you've identified your discomfort and have a heightened level of awareness.

Phase 2 - Identifying possibilities - you still aren't fully committed to change, but you are thinking about it. You are becoming dissatisfied with how things are and desiring something different.

Phase 3 - Reaching out - you admit you need help and that you can't make the desired change on your own. You begin to feel hopeful. Maybe you phone or e-mail a professional organizer, therapist, family member or friend. You begin to feel hopeful.

Phase 4 - Beyond talking - in this phase you devote the physical, emotional, and financial resources necessary to make changes. While you are committed to the process it can be slow. There are many ups and downs in this process!

Phase 5 - Life Jolts - A major life event (death of a loved one, divorce, illness, empty nest etc.) Can affect the organizing process and jolt you into "high gear". You become clearer than ever about what you want. In this stage, progress is fast. You are energized. Your organizing goals are within reach!

People change only when they are ready. They cannot be forced. When the pain of staying the same becomes greater than the fear of the unknown, change occurs.

If you would like to do more research, check out the Institute for Challenging Disorganization at www.challengingdisorganization.org. There are informative facts sheets available (including this one in its full form).
