I have a friend who is excited about a new system she implemented last year. She was tired of being financially strapped every year at Christmas time. Christmas is supposed to be a time of cheerful giving, so she came up with a system to plan ahead.

In January, they sit down and make a list of everyone they need to buy gifts for at Christmas. They also come up with a budget figure for each person. The next step is they write each name and figure on the outside of a corresponding envelope. They commit weekly to setting aside $25 in an envelope and designating it toward one or more recipients. Once they have enough money to cover someone's gift, they can go out and purchase their gift. The envelope can either hold the cash for the gift to be  purchased or the receipt once the gift has been bought. 

You could also jot "gift ideas" for each person on the outside of their envelope too. This system allows you to have the money set aside well before Christmas and technically all the Christmas shopping could be done by November!
