One of the most difficult aspects of the "Right Sizing" process for seniors is what to do with the treasured belongs that there just isn't room to take along.
It can be devastating when you get to this life stage and find out that your children don't want the stuff that you think they should want. It is difficult to accept, but the fact is that often the things we want to pass along are "our" memories, not our children's memories.
One of the most important steps in this process, before you get to the physical disposal of these items, is to have a little "heart to heart" with yourself.
As much as you may want the younger generation to care about the things that represent the past, the truth is that you can't MAKE them care......if you try (beyond a little gentle persuasion) it is only going to lead to tension in your relationship.....and is it worth it?
The fact is that the memory is not in the item.....but rather in your heart and life experiences. Instead of trying to force others to take your stuff.....or making them feel guilty for not taking it, why don't you consider taking some photos of the items. Write a few details and memories on the back of the photo, or on a corresponding journal page and then create a memory album. You may find that your family has a soft spot for the stories.....that they don't have for the actual stuff.
