Mike Vitez Discusses his new Book "The Road Back" on June 13! On June 13 at 7 pm Mike Vitez discusses and autographs his new book, "THE ROAD BACK, A Journey of Grace and Grit." This is the story of Matt Miller, 20, of Wayne, PA, a University of Virginia student and member of the college triathlon club. He and two classmates had just pedaled up a mountain pass. Matt was 20, so fit his resting pulse was 42! He was on top of the world in so many ways, in love, with dreams of attending medical school. And then, as he cycled along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia, tragedy struck. The real story is not what happened, but what happened after. Mike Vitez shares with readers the incredible, humbling, miraculous story of Matt's survival and recovery. It is a story, truly, of grace and grit, of an America that shines - families, community, individuals and institutions. The book is as gripping as it is inspiring. Ride along! Mike wrote about Matt for his newspaper, The Philadelphia Inquirer, in 2009, a three part series, and got an overwhelming response. Then Mike watched Matt continue to recover in the most astonishing ways. Mike decided to take a leave from the newspaper, immerse himself in Matt's life, and to write the book. The Road Back is not only about a young man's drive to reclaim his life, but about the people who rode with him, rescued him, helped him heal, and saw up close his amazing comeback. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Michael T. Vitez, a resident of Haddonfield for 26 years, is a staff writer at The Philadelphia Inquirer. He won the 1997 Pulitzer Prize for explanatory journalism for a series of stories about five people approaching the end of life. Vitez has taught classes in narrative non-fiction at the University of Pennsylvania and was a visiting Ferris Professor of Journalism at Princeton. He is also a former Michigan Journalism Fellow. He is the author of Rocky Stories: Tales of Love, Hope and Happiness at America's Most Famous Steps. (2006) He graduated from the University of Virginia, where he was editor-in-chief of The Cavalier Daily. He is married to Maureen Fitzgerald, food editor at the Inquirer, and they have three children, Tim, Sally and Jonathan (Boo). Vitez has coached a variety of teams in Haddonfield youth sports, and for the last 12 years has organized the annual Erlton Triathlon at the Erlton Swim Club. All programs are free and co-sponsored by the Haddonfield Friends of the Library. Call 429-1304 to register.

Haddonfield Historical Society and the Library Collaborate to Preserve Local History
The library and the Haddonfield Historical Society have long partnered together to preserve Haddonfield local history. Former library director Doug Rauschenberger and library director of the Historical Society, Kathy Tassini, continue to work on this arrangement to make Haddonfield's rich history available to its residents. The Historical Society and library are currently working on a project to digitize images of Haddonfield homes. The Haddonfield Library houses files on most of the houses in town. The files contain deeds and information on the building and maintenance of many of the dwellings. Many new home owners use the files to research the character of their homes. They are used in the library for research. The Historical Society and library are slowly digitizing these files with the help of volunteers Kim Custer and Cliff. Both facilities provide access to a wealth of historical books, manuscripts, and photos of life in Haddonfield. Visit the library's reference dept. (Jo-Ann Pure and staff) and the Historical Society to learn about these collections and the museum. The Historical Society has done much to push to the forefront the accomplishments of Haddonfield's most prominent naturalist, Samuel Nicholson Rhoads (1862-1952.) Rhoads' work included specimen collections both local and abroad. Kim Custer, Kathy Tassini, and Ron Smith, the environmental teacher at Haddonfield Memorial High School, will be exhibiting Rhoads' work as part of the celebration of "200 Years of Discovery", the Academy of Natural Sciences Bird Discovery Weekend on June 8th and 9th at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University entitled "Legacy in the Making, Past, Present and Future of Ornithology."
