March 2012
Volume 5, number 3

Greetings!

March is coming in like a lamb! Let's hope it goes out the same way. March is the month when we celebrate Women's History month, the luck of the Irish, and the promise of spring. As usual, there is a lot going on @your library! See the display celebrating women in mid March!

Rotary International has waged a valiant effort to help eradicate polio. Former library director and Rotary president-elect Doug Rauchenberger will give a program on his trip to India last spring. Doug will show pictures of the trip. He will discuss polio and Rotary's efforts to keep it at bay. Stop in on March 15 at 7 pm to hear Doug's fine program (snow date is March 22.)

Drop in to learn more about the use of e-books (Overdrive) and e-book readers on March 13 at 6 pm.

Teens can have a fun evening on March 7 to craft jewelry from recycled items. The Friends of the Library are hosting a College Planning night on March 13. Check it out below. We hope to see you soon at the library! Parking spaces on Tanner St. will enhance your visit!

College prepCollege Planning Forum for Teens on March 13

The Haddonfield Friends of the Library are sponsoring a College Planning Forum with HMHS Alumni event at the library  on Tuesday, March 13, from 7-8:30 pm.

All high school students with questions about applying to college and making the transition from high school to college are invited to attend an informal panel discussion with four recent HMHS graduates who are home from college on spring break. These alumni will share stories, give advice, and answer any questions about their college experiences. HMHS senior and Friends of the Library board member Tom Twitchell will moderate this event. Pizza and light refreshments will be served.   No registration is required.

Meet Tom Twitchell, Teen Leader of the Friends of the Library Tom Twitchell

Tom Twitchell is a senior at Haddonfield Memorial High School, serving as Senior Class President. He has lived in Haddonfield his whole life. Tom has served as a Teen Trustee on the Friends of the Library Executive Board over the past 2 years. Tom decided to serve on the Friends Board with encouragement from his grandparents, Jan and Bob Twitchell, who are very active in the community. Tom's mother, Patricia Twitchell, also served as a member and officer of the Haddonfield Library Board for many years.

Tom's interests include playing the cello with the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra. He also sings with the Madrigal, a Renaissance group that provides unaccompanied music with a very unique sound.

Tom has enjoyed his work as a teen trustee. He feels that the "library creates a social space for teens that is calming. The pleasant atmosphere of the Loft and Teen Nook areas of the library provide a place for teens to gather to share ideas and study." Tom enjoyed his work on the Friends annual book sales. Tom recruited many students from the National Honor Society to work at the sales. Tom says, " the interaction between teens and people of all other ages at the sale was wonderful and inspiring."

Phil Shapiro, President of the Friends, praises Tom for his many contributions. "Tom will be missed and we wish him great success in his future endeavors " said Phil Shapiro.

  What is Interlibrary Loan?
Jeanne Mugler
Jeanne Mugler, ILL Coordinator

Interlibrary loan is the loaning and borrowing of books between libraries in the NJ Library Network. Our library  can borrow from hundreds of libraries in NJ and from across the country. You can ask for books and movies that our library doesn't own to be borrowed. This can be done at the library or you can place the requests yourself on your computer. We also take requests by telephone. You can also search the Interlibrary loan catalog, which is called JerseyCat. This is a separate catalog from the library's online catalog. For more information click here or ask at the library. Jeanne Mugler is the Interlibrary Loan Coordinator at the library. Jeanne does an outstanding job of finding hard to locate books. Last year she borrowed 1200 items for Haddonfield card holders while loaning about 900 items to other libraries. This service is another shared service of NJ libraries to strengthen availability of resources for all NJ residents in a cost effective manner.
