Volume 5, number 4

Greetings!

April is one of the best months for libraries. We celebrate National Library Week from April 6-15. The theme this year is  "You Belong at Your Library." We are celebrating National Library Week by holding many events. The library will again host its popular Fine Free Week from April 6-14. Bring back overdue items and your fines will be waived. It doesn't matter how long the item has been overdue. The library is again partnering with the Food Bank of South Jersey to collect non-perishable food items for those in need. Bring food to the first floor of the library.

See the many programs and activities herein! If you haven't been here lately, please stop in to see what is new. The Friends of the Library also host their annual program at the Markeim Arts Center on April 22. Noted genealogist Megan Smolenyak will discuss her new book "Hey, America, Your Roots are Showing."

The library is again hosting 2 workshops on April 2 and 16 to assist people seeking employment to use Internet resources to find jobs. Take advantage of these quality workshops taught by Camden County instructors.

About Us

You Belong @ Your LibraryŽ this National Library Week, April 6-14

Whether you are a job seeker looking for resources to land a new job, a parent looking for free activities for children or a student searching for your next favorite book, you belong @ the Haddonfield Public Library!

Today's libraries help level the playing field by making both print and digital information affordable, available and accessible to all people. Libraries provide cultural heritage and genealogical collections, materials in print and electronic formats, job seeking resources, English as second language and citizenship classes, instruction on the use of e-books,  and many other creative and resourceful programs.

Libraries have historically served as our nation's great equalizers of knowledge. The strength of libraries has always been the diversity of their collections and commitment to serving all people. This National Library Week, join our nation's libraries and librarians by celebrating the place where we all belong.  First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April.

National library week

The Library Celebrates National Library Week with These Events:

The Haddonfield Public Library is celebrating National Library Week by holding many events. The library will again hold its popular Fine Free Week from April 6-14. Bring back overdue items and your fines will be waived. It doesn't matter how long the item has been overdue. The library is again partnering with the Food Bank of South Jersey to collect non-perishable food items for those in need. Bring food to the first floor of the library.

On April 11 at 7 pm, Howard Gillette, retired History Professor of Rutgers University and noted Camden County historian, will give a book talk on "Camden and the Rest of Us." It is based on his book, Camden After the Fall: Decline and Renewal in a Post-Industrial City, published by the University of Pennsylvania Press (2005). Gillette will discuss his theory that Camden City, once the heart of the region, needs to be stitched back into it. The book received best book awards from the Urban History Association and the New Jersey Historical Commission. Gillette's most recent book is Civitas by Design: Building Better Communities from the Garden City to the New Urbanism, was published by the University of Pennsylvania Press in 2010. Gillette will autograph copies of the book on Camden, which sells for $20 a copy.

On April 17 at 7 pm, Toby Zinman returns to discuss the Lost City of Z by David Grann. This huge best seller in 2009 is about Grann's obsession with early 20th century expeditions into the Brazilian Amazon by the legendary British explorer Percy Fawcett who was looking for a lost civilization in the jungle. Fawcett never returned and Grann (a writer for the New Yorker and an unlikely adventurer) sets out to find out what happened to them and to the City of Z.  The New York Times review said it "reads with all the pace and excitement of a movie thriller." Toby Zinman, who has just returned from her second trip to the Amazon, will lecture on the book-it's not necessary to have read it to join us.   Dr. Zinman is the Philadelphia Inquirer Theatre Critic. She is also a professor at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. A question and answer session will follow.

All programs are free and co-sponsored by the Haddonfield Friends of the Library. Call 429-1304 to register.
