January 2012
Volume 5, number 1

Greetings!

2012 is here!  Happy New Year to everyone. We look forward to serving the community in 2012. The library has a lot of activities for teens and children to go around the school schedule. The Robotics Club continues to meet with 4th graders on January 9 and 23 at 6:30 pm. A schedule for this group is under construction for the rest of the school year.  Wii gaming is ongoing on Wednesday afternoons. Check with the children's department for Wii gaming from 3:15-4:45 pm on Wednesday afternoons.

Erica Briant and Jason Keiner talk about their experiences in the Peace Corps in Swaziland on January 18. See story herein.

If you received a Nook, Amazon or other type of e-Book Reader for the holidays, read the story below. Our staff will be happy to help you use your e-Book Reader with Overdrive, the library's subscription to e-books, at no charge.

The library received generous donations from both Cub Scout Pack 64 and from the South Jersey Charitable Foundation. A great way to start off 2012. Our special thanks to both of these groups - read about it!

South Jersey Charitable Foundation Awards Generous Grant to the Library!

 Smart investing
The Library Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that the library has been awarded a generous unrestricted grant of $5000 from the South Jersey Charitable Foundation. Library Board President Gene Kain said "this great gift came at the right time. Since the gift is unrestricted, it allows us to keep the library open more hours and days. Past funding from SJCF enabled us to launch a new website in 2009. Last year funds helped with refurbishing the Teen Loft area, which was dedicated on April 16. We are very grateful to the South Jersey Charitable Foundation for investing in the future of the Haddonfield Public Library. This funding has really made a difference during these hard economic times. Our special thanks to SJCF for this wonderful support of the library."

Tanner Street Fix up over Library Window Wells Done by Local Cub Scout Pack 64!

Plexiglass Tanner St 2011

The Webelos Den of Cub Scout Pack 64 did another fine volunteer deed for the library in December. The 4th and 5th graders assisted Jeff Purnell and other adult leaders in replacing the plexiglass over the window wells on the Tanner St. side of the library. They also repointed the bricks in the area. It looks wonderful. A special thanks to Cub Scout Pack 64 for their fine work on this much needed task.

What's Up with the Tanner Street Kiosk and Parking Meters?  kiosks parking

Starting January 1, Tanner St. has parking kiosks instead of the old, traditional parking meters. The kiosk is in service from 9 am to 6 pm, Monday through Friday. Parking is still free throughout the Borough on Saturdays and Sundays.
The system requires that you make payment at the kiosk and then display the receipt in the passenger side of the car dashboard, time stamp facing up.

Instructions: 1. Select payment type (credit card or cash). 2. Pay with coins, bills, or credit/ debit card.  3. Purchase your ticket.  4. Display your ticket face up on the dashboard. It is important to note that kiosks do not provide change. The parking fee is .50 per hour for up to three hours of parking on Tanner St. There are 8 new spaces available on the library side of Tanner St.

Watch for Announcement of Nooks that You can Borrow! Overdrive downloadable device

The library staff is working hard to make e-books available for library borrowers. You probably know that the library subscribes to Overdrive.  Overdrive provides thousands of audiobooks and e-books that can be downloaded to your PC and then to your mobile device. You use your library card to transfer the books at no cost to you. Generally the books stay on your account for 7-14 days. This is because the library has subscribed with twenty other South Jersey libraries to afford the shared service. NJ libraries have a twenty year tradition of Sharing Services to ensure cost savings.

The Haddonfield Friends of the Library have given funds for the library to purchase additional e-books to meet increasing demand. The Friends have also provided funds for the library to circulate some e- book readers. This service is coming later in January. We will be loaning six Nook e-Book Readers for 2 weeks. Each Nook will have 25 books that you can read. Watch for announcements later this month!

The library staff is now giving individual instruction to borrowers on how to use Overdrive. Jo-Ann Pure, head of Reference Services, has created help sheets. There are also easy to understand tutorials available on Overdrive. Stop in to catch up on this, especially if you received an e-Book Reader for the holidays.

The Friends of the Library do a great deal to improve the library. Visit here to join or renew your tax deductible Friends membership.

Q and A NJ Virtual Reference Service Ends in 2011

NJ libraries have served as a national model of virtual Reference service for the last decade. You could always reach a librarian through chat or email with your question at www.qandanj.org  The service is a casualty of budget cutbacks. This innovative and much replicated website ceased on December 31, 2011. The NJ library community is still trying to preserve the service and hopes to continue it sometime in the future. Watch for announcements on QandAnj. It originated with the South Jersey Regional Library Cooperative with funding from the NJ State Library. Libraries throughout NJ staffed the service during library operating hours as a Shared Service.
