Greetings!
Fall is here. There is a lot of excitement with the news that Amazon's Kindle e-book reader is now compatible with the library's Overdrive service. The library has had downloadable audio and ebooks through Overdrive for several years. Now your Kindle will work with this service to download eBooks with your library card. Please read the story below.
The Haddonfield Friends of the Library had a very successful annual book sale Sept. 23-26. Check out the photos of hundreds of book lovers of all ages and of the Friends in action! The Friends membership drive is now on. Please consider joining this worthy group which does so much to enhance your library.
Recently the library attended the Open House at Haddonfield Memorial High School. I was struck by how many people are using services to assist their students with testing for SATs, achievement tests, etc. The library subscribes to the comprehensive Gale's Testing and Educational resource. You can study for these tests and take tutorials on line with your Haddonfield Library card. The online resource also includes college guides, a wealth of materials on admission, as well as study guides for Police, Fire, ASVAB, and other academic and vocational tests. Help us to spread the word that these resources are available anytime, anywhere with your updated library card! Click here to use the Gale Testing and Educational Center.
Many of you know our staff. Read about them herein and stop in to say hello to our dedicated employees who make the library the fine community resource for you!
Cordially,
Susan Briant

Amazon's Kindle E-Book Reader is now Compatible with Overdrive! At long last!
The library has subscribed to Overdrive for several years, as part of shared services in the NJ Library Network. OverDrive, the leading multichannel digital distributor of eBooks, audiobooks and other digital content, supplies 11,000 public and school libraries in the U.S. Library eBooks through Overdrive are already available on Barnes & Noble's Nook, the Sony Reader, smartphones, laptops and other devices. Now the Kindle's eBooks can be downloaded as part of Overdrive!
The process for borrowing a public library eBook for Kindle is similar to using other devices. For more information on borrowing eBooks on your Kindle through the library, visit Haddonfield Public Library. The My Help screen is very helpful to get started.
Many eBooks are already in the library's catalog. You will see an eBook icon in the record. As with all eBooks and other digital content at OverDrive-powered libraries and schools, titles are available 24/7 and incur no late fees because they automatically expire at the end of the lending period. Reserves may be placed. The library will be directing more funds into eBooks to meet higher demand.
Reference Librarian Jo-Ann Pure has already given a lot of instruction to those using devices to access Overdrive. Jo-Ann and other staff members will be glad to assist if you visit with or without your Kindle, Sony, Nook or other device. The My Help Screens available on the library website will walk you through accessing the eBooks.

Friends of the Library Book Sale - A Smashing Success! Thanks to all! The Friends of the Library Book Sale held on Sept. 24 and 25, was a fabulous event. Even though the rain threatened good turnout, luckily the weekend went very well. Hundreds of people showed up each day to browse and purchase from the 27,000 items on sale. Book Sale co-chairs, John Wolf and Brian Smith, thank the volunteers who worked the sale each day. This included all of the Friends Executive Board (Officers Phil Shapiro, Mike Kinsey, Kristin Redmond, Lisa Howard, Betsy Anderson) and Membership Chair, Susan K. Reed; Jerry Tritt, Rich Cunliffe, Eileen Duffy, Nina Rebmann, Natalia Kastenberg, and Tom Twitchell. A core of volunteers work the sale faithfully every year, including Chris L, Dorothy Saynisch, David Jacobowitz, Kathleen Davis, John Burmaster, Carol Smith, Nan Mattis, Darlene Dziomba, Lisbeth Shean, Ann Kearney, Sharon Jachter, Geoffrey Chalkley, National Honor Society students, Juliet Strasser, and this year, the Girl Scouts. Many other people volunteered too. The Friends thank everyone in the community for donating such superb books to make the Haddonfield Friends Book Sale one of the premier book sales each year in NJ. Click here to see pictures of this exciting book sale! The Friends also had a wonderful members' only preview the evening of Sept. 23, attended by about 100 Friends' members. Activities included book appraisal by Scott Hartman, book signings by local authors Robert Byrd, Dan Gutman, Robert Strauss, and Mike Vitez, light refreshments, the preview of several hundred books ahead of the weekend sale, and the sale of 12 lovely gift baskets, made by Membership Chair Susan K. Reed. A good time was had by everyone! Funds received from the sale go to support all children's, teen, and adult programs. The Friends also recently paid for furnishings in the Teen Loft and Teen Nook areas- popular places for Haddonfield teens! The Friends annual membership drive is now underway. Visit here to renew your membership or to join as a new Friend! The Friends make a huge difference in the services and programs that the Haddonfield Library offers to the community! The Library Board of Trustees and the staff thank all of the Friends for all that they do for the library! |

Staff and the Services and Programs They Bring to You!
This summer, the library was able to nearly double the bandwidth of its Internet services through a grant (BTOP) awarded to the NJ State Library. Bandwidth is like a highway for the Internet - the larger your bandwidth, the faster you can go. The library's Internet service is now much faster. This is particularly important with ever increasing demands on the Internet such as the need to view video and hear audio via the Net. The library also applied for E-rate funding to subsidize the cost of increased bandwidth and capacity. Director Briant handled the E-rate grant application.
Staff members Jeannie Reinking and Pam Alles oversaw the technical implementation of the project, working with the NJ State Library, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a grant sponsor, and our IT vendor. A special thanks to Pam and Jeannie for their fine work on this project with Marc! They oversee many technical projects at the library and keep our computers and network moving.
Library Book Club - are you looking for a fun opportunity to read and discuss books with a nice group of people each month? Then consider joining the library's adult book group as led by Technical Services Librarian, Anne Frontino. Anne selects the books to be read (with advice from the group.) Anne is an avid reader with vast knowledge of reading across many genres. The group meets usually on the third Monday of each month at the library at 7 pm. Click here for information on the library's book group.
