Abraham Lincoln                                 Haddonfield Public Library

September 2011
Volume 4, number 9

Greetings!

As usual, there is a lot going on @ your library!

The Friends of the Library are gearing up for another spectacular book sale. Bring in your books until Sept. 21. The Friends do so much to support the library. Mark your calendar for the dates of Sept. 23-25 for the next sale!

September is Library Card sign up month. Cal Ripken, Jr. is the honorary chairperson of  the American Library Association's celebration of the importance of library cards and America's libraries (observed since 1987).

The library came through Hurricane Irene and several heavy rain storms with a dry basement. We are cautiously optimistic that the Tanner St. infrastructure repairs are keeping the basement dry. A special thanks to the Borough of Haddonfield and Dept. of Public Works for fine preparation for the storm.

For  teens, craft programs continue. See story below.

The Daughters of the American Revolution are placing a lovely display in Sept.  Staff member Claire Stairiker will place a display for Banned Books Week from Sept. 24- Oct. 1. The staff and Library Board hope to see you soon at the library!

About Us
Book Sale Prices Rise at the Library
The library depends on the income it raises from the small book sale it has all year long.  The funds subsidize our budget as part of the library's revenue share. We are raising prices as of Sept. 6.
New prices are:
Hardcovers $2.00
Paperbacks $1.00
DVDs/ CDs/ Audio books 2.00 each
Audiocassettes, LPs and VHS tapes .50 each
These prices apply to adult and children's collections. The Friends book sale prices may vary, due to the short sale and quality of the items.
Thank you for your continuing support of the Haddonfield Library!

Summer Reading "One World, Many Stories" a Great SuccessOne World Many Stories 3

Each summer, kids preschool through teen are invited to keep track of books they read during our Summer Reading Program. A new theme is introduced each summer, and theme-related programs and incentives encourage members to continue to enjoy reading through the summer. The Summer Reading Program theme for 2011 was One World, Many Stories for kids and You Are Here for teens.  Dorothy Peppard, Children's Librarian, reports that 120 children and their parents attended the final program of the Summer Reading program on August 25, with Alex and the Kaleidoscope Band. A great time was had by all - 715 kids participated in the reading program.  Click here to see pictures from the Summer Reading Program final party. Don't forget to pick up your party bags with certificate of completion if you didn't attend the Summer Reading program. This includes a voucher for a free book at the Friends annual book sale (see story below.)

September is the time to get the smartest card.... Your

Haddonfield Public  Library  Card!

As Haddonfield   students head back to school this September, the Haddonfield Public Library wants to make sure that all children and teens have the most important school supply of all - a library card.

Owning a library card provides students the resources they need to compete academically. Most public libraries (89.6 percent) provide students free access to databases of news articles, encyclopedias and test preparation materials, as well as homework help and resources. In addition, public libraries are the number one access point for free Internet access, an important resource for families  when 96 percent of school districts require students to use the Internet to complete their homework.

"Today's libraries provide all types of students with the tools they need to succeed," says Deborah Marchand, Secretary of the Library Board of Trustees. "Libraries provide young readers with exciting and engaging programs that make learning fun. It is for these reasons that now more then ever, a library card is most important school supply of all."

Getting a library card is easy.  Stop in at the library and leave with your library card. Bring proof of current residence or employment  in Haddonfield . Business owners and full time employees at Haddonfield businesses are also eligible for library cards, as are students and teachers in Haddonfield schools. For more infomation on how to sign up for a library card visit the library here.

Raining Cats and Rats

Local author Donna Gottardi book talks "It's Raining Cats and Rats"  on Sept. 29 at 7 pm

Donna Gottardi answered an Internet ad for a teaching job in the last town in northeastern China, on the border with Russia - in Chinese Siberia. Without knowing a word of Chinese, or a single person in China, Gottardi booked a ticket to one of the greatest adventures of her lifetime. In a matter of weeks, she found herself in the front of a classroom full of Chinese teachers of English, in a place 10,000 miles from her friends, family, and her home. Find out how Gottardi's trust in herself and others opened a window into this rural Chinese outpost and to its people.  Hear how Gottardi begins to help the teachers not only to learn English, but to understand Americans as she learns to understand the people of rural China.  Donna will autograph copies of her book "It's Raining Cats and Rats: Lessons and Life in Chinese Siberia " and answer questions from the audience. This free program is sponsored by the Haddonfield Friends of the Library. Call 429-1304 to register.
