Abraham Lincoln                                 Haddonfield Public Library

August 2011
Volume 4, number 8

Greetings!

Welcome to the hot days of August! There is a lot going on at the library. There is still time to participate in the Children's Summer Reading programs. Enjoy the fun reading programs @ your library.

The Haddonfield Friends of the Library are now collecting books for the annual book sale. The sale will be held on Sept. 24 and 25. Drop off those books - see article below.

As Haddonfield has quite a traveling population, the library is now subscribing to an online database to learn other languages. Read about BYKI (Before You Know It) below.

Stop in, pick up books, DVDs, or attend a program at the library, the coolest place in town!

The display this month is related to New York art and is called "New York State of Mind". Resident Joe Haro collaborated with staff member Claire Stairiker to create it.

Cordially,

Susan Briant

Friends of the Library are collecting books for the annual Book Sale on Sept. 24 and 25.

The Friends of the library annual book sale will be held on September 24 from 10-3 pm and Sept. 25 from 12-5 pm. Mark your calendars now! The sale will go on, rain or shine, with the tents that the Friends now use.

In the meantime, do a good deed to help your library and clean out your book shelves. Each year the Friends collect about 20,000 books and audio items for the sale. The Friends are also seeking video and Wii games in working order. Most of the donations come from you, the residents of Haddonfield. This sale is renowned for its quality- bringing people from as far away as New York. The Friends are collecting from now through mid-September. Bring your donations to the first floor of the library during the library's open hours. They must be in good condition (no moldy items or textbooks, please.)

The Friends need volunteers for a number of tasks. This includes sorting donations in August and September. You can also work the days of the sale, bake goods for the sale, and more. Sign up at the front desk on the first floor or call 429-1304 to volunteer.  Haddonfield students can earn credit for community service when they volunteer. The Friends and library thank you for your support!  Make a Friend and Be a Friend @ your library! Visit here to be a Friend!

Piggy Bank New Look for Tax Bill but No Tax Increase

When you receive your third quarter property tax bill this month, you will see a new tax line for Public Library tax. THIS IS NOT A NEW TAX! Until this year, appropriations for municipal libraries were included within the municipal tax rate.

To ensure fiscal parity among municipalities that support a local or joint library and those that support a county library, on March 21, 2011, Governor Christie enacted P. L. 2011, c.38 (S-2068). This law provides a dedicated line item on the property tax bill for the minimum funding to municipal libraries.

The Library Board wants you to know that this does not result in any increased taxes, but only changes the way your tax bill looks. This change reduces the municipal tax levy and rate, and creates a new line item on the tax bill for library purposes. Now all state residents that support a public library will clearly see the cost of the library on their property tax bills.

This new law simply provides a dedicated line item on the property tax bill to collect the minimum funding. It provides greater transparency in library funding. Again, it does not result in any increased taxes, nor does it change existing financial, operational, personnel, or other relationships between a municipality and the library. If you have any questions, contact Susan Briant, Library Director at 429-1304 or email sbriant@haddonfieldlibrary.org
