Northside Nelson Johnson Book Talks the Northside on June 25

On June 25 at 2 pm Nelson Johnson, author of "The Northside" and "Boardwalk Empire" will discuss "The Northside." He will sign copies of both acclaimed works.

In "The Northside", Johnson brings the untold story of Atlantic City's black community vividly to life, from the arrival of the first African Americans to Absecon Island in the early 19th century through the glory days of the "World's Playground." Drawing on dozens of personal interviews and painstaking archival research, he reveals long-forgotten details about the people on whose backs the gambling mecca was built and offers a wide-ranging survey of the accomplishments of more recent generations. Johnson's previous book, "Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City", inspired the critically acclaimed HBO series from Martin Scorsese and Terence Winter.

This free program is co-sponsored by the Haddonfield Friends of the Library. Call 429-1304 to register.

Garden Club sculpture

Jolyne Dalzell, Susan Briant, and Pat Gargano admire the statue

Haddonfield Garden Club dedicates statue on June 14

The Haddonfield Garden Club will hold a brief dedication ceremony on the grounds of the library on June 14 at 11 am to dedicate its 100th Anniversary Gift to the Borough of Haddonfield.  In 2006, The Haddonfield Garden Club became 100 years of age.

The first meeting of the Haddonfield Garden Club was held in June 1906 on the porch of the summer home of Mrs. John Hopkins.  Her summer home was called " Tavistock".   The Haddonfield Garden Club is the oldest garden club in the state of New Jersey.

The club received help from the family of the late Angelo Gargano; the family requested memorial donations be made to the garden club for this purpose when Gargano died last year.

Funds were used to purchase a statue for the library grounds. "Boy Reading on Top of the World" has been placed in the Reading Garden near the benches and shade trees, and is meant to offer a place to reflect and serve as a discussion subject for children visiting the library.
