Abraham Lincoln                                 Haddonfield Public Library

April 2011
Volume 4, number 4

Greetings!

Please join us for the dedication of the Loft on April 13, at 3:30 pm - a teen and adult friendly area @ the Haddonfield Public Library!  Celebrate with our Haddonfield Friends of the Library, who made the refurbished space possible.

April 10-17 is National Library Week and there's lots to celebrate @ your library. It's a fine free week and we collect food for fines.  Also, the Friends annual program is April 14, at 7 pm at the Markeim Art Center. Local author Mike Vitez will discuss his forthcoming book
and sign copies of his book "Rocky Stories."

We just launched a new collection of Express DVDs to get popular movies to you faster.

See the stories on events and programs below.  Haddonfield has had public library service since 1803 and the public library is going strong! The Haddonfield Friends of the Library have been going strong since 1958! We applaud  them and hope you will join in the celebration! Hope to see you at the library on April 13 or someday soon!

Cordially,

Susan Briant

Library Director

Past President, NJ Library Association 2009-10

Join us for the Dedication of the Loft and Gaming Space on April 13, at 3:30 pm

"The Loft" will be dedicated on April 13, at 3:30 pm. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony, brief remarks to thank the Friends and library volunteers, and tours of the Loft.  The Loft is the refurbished balcony area of the 1958 addition to the building. The Haddonfield Friends of the Library applied for and received funding from the Haddonfield Holiday House tour in 2009. The funds have been used to create a teen and adult friendly area. Funds were also used to purchase a new Wii gaming system, Wii games, a large screen TV, and other presentation equipment for the library's meeting room. Teens are now gaming at the library after school.
Following the dedication, there will be special gaming for teens. The local teen band "The Ghost Shirt Society" will play at 4:30 pm. Light refreshments will round out the event. New DVD and music CD collections for teens have also been made possible from Friends funding.
Before the dedication, Barnes and Noble will be demonstrating the Nook e-book reader at 2 pm.
Demonstrations of the "Outspoken Library",  our new computer workstation for those with disabilities,  will be given.  Get your picture taken as a "Library Champion" during Snapshot Day.
Everyone in Haddonfield is welcome to attend the events on April 13! Come see what's new @your library!

Mike VitezFriends Annual Program with Mike Vitez on April 14, at 7 pm at the Markeim Art Center

The Haddonfield Friends of the Library are hosting their annual program on April 14, from 7-9 pm at the Markeim Art Center.  Local author Mike Vitez, a Haddonfield resident and writer for the Philadelphia Inquirer, is writing a new book.  The book is the true story of a young man from Wayne, PA who was training in Virginia for the Ironman triathlon when he had a horrific bicycle accident.  It is the story of miraculous survival, determination, and love.  This young man was able to attend Penn Medical School and is currently training for the Ironman.  Mike is about halfway done with this inspirational story.  Mike is also the author of Rocky Stories.  He will sell and autograph copies of Rocky Stories after the discussion.  Light refreshments will be served.
For more information on the program, the Friends or to join, click here.

DVDS

Express DVDs are here! Check them out!

A few months ago Express Reads were introduced. These are best selling books that circulate for 7 days. This service has been so popular that we now have Express DVDs. You will find high demand DVDs on a shelf. These are not reservable. They circulate for three days instead of 7. We still have copies that circulate for 7 days and that you may reserve. Please check on the Express Reads and DVDs collections at your next visit to the library! Let us know what you think.

Kids Made Fantastic Music CDs - it was a huge success! Sara O'Brien

Children's Librarian Dorothy Peppard is pleased that 25-30 spirited boys and girls gathered in the Haddonfield Public Library meeting room for 1 ½ hours each Friday after school and accomplished something great! Haddonfield Kids who participated in singer-songwriter Sara O'Brien's (Luloo at the Library) "Read, Write, Rock SONG" workshop came up with ideas and wrote lyrics for two great songs: "Cheese Man" and "The Rhyming Song." With help from Sara, lyrics were set to music and recorded at the Smash Palace Studio in Merchantville. The last session, a CD release party, was held at The Treehouse Coffee Shop in Audubon, and included the kids' performance of both songs. Each member now has a copy of the CD (aptly entitled Cheese Man) he or she helped to create!

This program was made possible by the Haddonfield Friends of the Library,  which provides funds for the majority of children's, teen, and adult programs!
