Toby Zinman Returns to Discuss "Magic Realism" on Feb. 15 at 7 pm
On February 15, 2011, our author series resumes at 7 pm with local writer and theatre columnist Toby Zinman. Toby, who has just returned from Central America, will lecture on Magic Realism, the signature style of Latin Caribbean fiction and film. The paradox contained in this label - "magic" and "realism" - is crucial: the odd, sometimes flabbergasting collision between what we know as realism (representing the world as it is, in all its recognizable, verifiable specificity) and magic (the inexplicable, the fantastic, and the wondrous.) As is often the case, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts and the effect of magic realism is simultaneously grand, funny, and poetic. The lecture will introduce the topic and provide examples from some of its leading exponents: Gabriel Garcia-Marquez, Carlos Fuentes, Laura Esquivel, Julio Cortazar, and Isabel Allende, with recommendations for novels and movies. Toby Zinman is Professor of English at the University of the Arts and theatre critic for the Philadelphia Inquirer. The Friends of the Library are co-sponsors of this free event. Call 429-1304 to register.

It's Tax Season and we are ready to help! Are you looking for federal and state tax forms? Last year NJ stopped distributing print tax forms in libraries. This year the federal government decided not to mail tax forms to your residence. The library can help you find the forms you are seeking. Many of the federal print tax forms and instructions will be available at the library. They are a little later this year due to changes in the US tax code. We anticipate receiving them soon. Our staff will assist with downloading forms and with finding tax assistance at other area libraries. Forms will be sold for .15 a copy. Most of the NJ forms are available via download. For NJ forms click here. For US tax forms visit here. |
