March 2011
Volume 4, number 3

Greetings!

March is coming in like a lamb. We hope that means Spring won't be far away. As usual, there's a lot going on @your library! We hope you will stop in to see the positive changes being made over the next few months.

The Haddonfield Friends of the Library project to refurbish the balcony area to make it "teen friendly" and more convenient is almost complete. Also, as part of this effort, the Friends have purchased a Large Screen TV and Wii system. We are launching gaming for teens during Teen Tech Week. Read about these fantastic improvements and new programs and services herein.

March is Women's History month. The theme this year is "Our History is Our Strength". Check out the beautiful display honoring women created by staff member, Claire Stairiker. Local theatre critic Toby Zinman will give a program to honor women on March 15.

Lastly, need a tax form? Our staff will cheerfully help you to find that hard to find tax form.

Our staff hopes to see you soon!

Cordially,

Susan Briant

The Loft  is a Welcoming Spot for Teens! Check it out!

The Haddonfield Friends of the Library's project to refurbish the balcony in the library is near completion. The Friends have provided new comfortable furnishings, cafe tables, carpeting, lighting, and study areas upstairs. Friends funds, obtained from the Haddonfield Holiday House tour in 2009, have made the project possible. Teens and adults are already flocking to the area to use the comfortable chairs and tables. The wireless access in the area connects them to the Internet with their laptops and other devices. Children's Librarian Dorothy Peppard designed the area and chose the furnishings, building on recommendations of library professionals Leslie and Alan Burger. Stop in to see the loft and watch for information on a dedication of the area! Thanks, Haddonfield Friends, for making this possible.  For more information on the Friends or to join, visit www.hfol.org

The 2011 theme - Mix and Mash @ your library - focuses on encouraging teens to use library resources to express their creativity by developing their own unique online content and safely sharing it by using online collaborative tools. Zinman, Toby

Toby Zinman Discusses Ibsen's "A Doll's House" on March 15, for Women's History Month

On March 15, from 7:00-8:30 pm,  Toby Zinman will discuss A Doll's House, Ibsen's most famous play. The play addresses the issues of women's rights 130 years ago; the play's continued relevance is evident from the endless revivals, rewritings, etc., making it a suitable subject for Women's History Month. Toby's talk will summarize the play, suggest various interpretations, and report on its ongoing and often bizarre life through the years. It has proven to be one of world literature's most controversial and theatrically tempting plays on  stage. As the endless updates-by translators, directors and actors-show,  as gender politics go, so goes Ibsen.  Ms. Zinman's favorite line from the play, "Why Nora, you've changed!" turns out to be truer than Ibsen could possibly have known, while her husband, Torvald, may be the most frequently tossed husband in the history of marriage.  A question and answer session will follow the presentation.

Toby Zinman is Professor of English at the University of the Arts and theatre critic for the Philadelphia Inquirer.  The Haddonfield Friends of the Library are co-sponsors of this free program. Call 429-1304 to register.

DVDS

Multi Media Room Makes for Easy Access to Your Favorite DVDS and CDs

In our continuing effort to make better use of the space we have and to improve service for the community, the adult media collections  have been moved into the front room as you enter the library. This area formerly housed the print Reference books.  It will now be easier to browse the DVD and CD collections - all in one room.

The library has been migrating to electronic reference resources. The print reference collections are now housed near the non-fiction in the rear part of the building.

Staff members Jo-Ann Pure, Anne Frontino, Linda Roberts, and Claire Stairiker worked very hard on this project. A special thank you to Kathy Schalk-Greene, director of the Mt. Laurel Public Library, for offering her pro bono services as a nationally known space planner, to assist the Haddonfield Public Library in improving customer service.

IRS
It's Tax Season and we are ready to help!
Are  you looking for federal and state tax forms? Last year NJ stopped distributing print tax forms in libraries. This year the federal government decided not to mail tax forms to your residence. The library can help you find the forms you are seeking. Many of the federal print tax forms and instructions are available at the library for free.

Our staff will assist with downloading forms and with finding tax assistance at other area libraries. Forms will be sold for .15 a copy.
Most of the NJ forms are available via download. For NJ forms click here. For US tax forms visit here.
