Greetings!
Happy New Year to you and your family! There is some relief that we are starting a new year as 2010 was unique. It posed certain challenges for everyone in the community. We hope for a more stable year as far as the library being open to meet your needs. The schedule of operation for 2011 is published below.
We are starting the new year with some exciting news. The balcony and rear part of the building have been refurbished with new paint, carpeting, and furnishings. This part of the building was added in 1958. The area will be attractive and more convenient for customers. These enhancements have been made possible, for the most part, by the Haddonfield Friends of the Library.
Our author programs resume on Jan. 12, when scientist Tom Belton will talk about NJ's environment. See article below.
The Library Board and staff wish everyone a healthy, happy 2011!
Sincerely,
Susan Briant

| | Tom Belton, scientist and author of Protecting N.J.'s Environment |
Author Tom Belton Discusses the NJ Environment on Jan. 12, at 7 pm.
Tom Belton is a scientist with the NJ Dept. of Environmental Protection. He has been involved in environmental research for the past 25 years. Tom will discuss his new book and autograph copies of "Protecting New Jersey's Environment: From Cancer Alley to the New Garden State" from Rutgers University Press on Jan. 12, at 7 pm.
Belton considers key environmental issues in NJ and champions the ways common citizens have sought justice when faced with unseen health threats. Often, as people search for remedies in their neighborhoods, the challenges they face result in what Belton calls bare-knuckles environmental protection. With people as its focus, Protecting NJ's Environment explores the science underpinning environmental issues and the public policy infighting that is often beneath the controversies. Belton offers the public a go-to guide on how to seek environmental protection in practical ways.

The Friends of the Library Spruce up the Balcony @your library!
The adage, "The only way to have a friend is to be a friend" applies at the library. The Haddonfield Friends of the Library have taken action to spruce up the balcony and 1958 addition to the library. Last year the Friends were awarded the proceeds of the Haddonfield Holiday House Tour. The library's roof was recently repaired. This meant the project could go forward. Thanks to the Friends and the Library Board teaming up, the center of the balcony has been opened up. A welcoming space with new furniture, lighting, paint, and collections will be available in January. This is a multi-purpose space. Furnishings are teen centered to encourage use of the library by teens.
A special thanks to our Friends under the leadership of president Phil Shapiro. Vice-President Ruth Balton wrote the application for the project to make this possible. Friend Betsy Anderson was a super help with the House Tour coordination for the Friends. Children's Librarian Dorothy Peppard chose the furniture, carpet and paint colors.
The Friends also purchased a large screen TV and WII for the library meeting room to enhance teen and adult programs. Teen Coordinator Erica Braverman assisted with selection of games for teens. Gaming programs will be available later in January. Watch for news in the new year! And a special thanks to all Haddonfield Friends of the Library. Their support allows many improvements at the library and this has been the case for many years. The Friends membership drive continues. To join visit www.hfol.org |
