Greetings!
November is a month to give thanks. We celebrate our freedom in several ways. On Election Day, November 2, we go to the polls to elect representatives to keep our democracy alive. We also honor American veterans on Nov. 11, Veterans Day. Then we have our Thanksgiving events with our families, friends, and loved ones. Educate yourself about freedom! This month we are launching a new service called "Express Reads." Please read about this herein. Author Bill Meehan visits to collect scary stories for his forthcoming book "Haunted Haddonfield II" on Nov. 30. Kids can begin to learn Spanish at Spanish Storytime on Nov. 16. Stop in soon!

Honor Veterans and our Freedom on November 11 on Veterans Day
| | President Eisenhower signing legislation that amended Armistice Day to be called Veterans Day to honor living veterans. |
Veterans Day gives Americans the opportunity to celebrate the bravery and sacrifice of all U.S. veterans.
However, some Americans don't know why we commemorate our veterans on Nov.11. Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, originally was set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I on Nov. 11, 1918. In legislation passed in 1938, Nov. 11 was "dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as "Armistice Day."
A Brief History of Veterans Day In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting the word "Veterans." After approval of the legislation on June 1,1954, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. Nov. 11, is specifically set aside to thank and honor living veterans who served honorably in the military in war or peace. Memorial Day honors service members who died in service to their country or as a result of injuries incurred during battle. This information came from www.military.com

Check Out Express Reads and Express DVDs!
In an effort to get books to you sooner, we are launching a new collection of the most sought after reads. It is called "Express Reads." Best sellers with high demand will be placed on a special shelf and will be available on a first come, first serve basis. They will circulate for one week only. They may not be renewed. If the books are kept out longer than 7 days, the fine will be $2 a day. This won't affect the process of putting a hold on a book. It just gives you another option to get the book faster if you are in the right place at the right time.
This service will also be available for some high demand DVDs. Stay tuned for more information and find out soon when you visit the library. |
