| Greetings!
Welcome to September! September is Library Card Sign Up Month! Your library card is one of the smartest cards you can use for education and to save money. If your card is out of date, stop in and get it updated. If you have never had a card, stop in with identification showing your residence, and get a card right away.
The Friends of the Library have their fabulous annual book sale. This year they will have a 2 day sale on Sept. 25 and 26, preceded by a Members Only event on Sept. 24. See story below!
The Haddonfield Friends of the Library are collecting books now for the annual book sale. Drop off those books and other audiovisual items that you have saved for the Friends. There are many ways to volunteer to help the Friends- read below.
The library had a banner year for children's and teen summer reading! More than 800 kids and teens participated - see the fun they had in the pictures below.
Coming next month - all about E-books, which the library has and many people use.
Sincerely, Susan Briant

Friends of the Library are collecting books & seeking volunteers for the fabulous Book Sale on 9/25 & 9/26
If you are one of the many book lovers in Haddonfield, you can volunteer to help the Friends with the sale. The Friends are seeking volunteers to help with sorting items. You can make a major contribution by donating books, movies, and CDs. The Friends are accepting your collections until September 22. (No textbooks or mildewed books, please.) Bring them to the first floor of the library.
For those who like to help the days of the sale, the Friends are seeking cashiers and people to stock the tables, bring out books, etc. Lastly, if you are a baker or wish to donate a baked good, the Friends will sell them on the days of the sale. Sign up for any of the volunteer jobs by visiting the library or calling 429-1304. The success of the sale is due to you, the community, and your contributions. Make a friend, be a Friend, have fun, and help the library! For more information on the sale or to join the Friends, visit www.hfol.org . Thanks for your help! |

Haddonfield Newcomers Club Makes Generous Donation to the Library!
Newcomer Jessica Winton presents Susan Briant with $200 donation | The Newcomer's Club of Haddonfield is an organization designed to acquaint women and their families who reside in Haddonfield (and surrounding towns without a similar Club) with their town and "neighbors". We provide opportunities for our members to meet and socialize through various social events, playgroups, family gatherings, gourmet groups and community volunteer projects.
The group recently held a fundraising effort for the library and raised $200 The library will use the proceeds in refurbishing the balcony area for teens and adults. The Friends of the Library have donated proceeds of the House Tour for this project, which will be completed this fall. Library Director Susan Briant will speak at the Newcomers Club on September 1, at 7 pm at the monthly meeting at the Baptist Church. She will talk about What's New at the Library and give updates on the library.
The Newcomers group welcomes Haddonfield residents. You do not have to be a new resident to join the group. If you want to meet new people, have fun, and attend a stimulating monthly meeting, consider coming to a meeting. For more information, click here..
President Gene Kain, the Library Board of Trustees and the staff are very grateful to the co-chairs Catalina Nolte, Betsy Palmateer, and the members of the Newcomers Club for this generous gift to the library. |

Megan Smolenyak is a genealogical adventurer who loves solving mysteries, making unexpected discoveries and pushing the boundaries of conventional genealogy. Since 1999, she's worn many hats in the family history world, including Chief Family Historian and spokesperson for Ancestry.com, the largest genealogical company in the world, creator of RootsTelevision.com, a pioneering online channel of free videos and winner of four Telly Awards, and founder of UnclaimedPersons.org, a volunteer group that assists coroners and medical examiners.

Click here to reserve Megan's books, including Who Do You Think You Are?: The Essential Guide to Tracing Your Family History, companion guide to the NBC series. Megan will give a program "Remembering Our Ancestors" on Sept. 30, from 7-8:30 pm at the library. She is the author of Honoring Our Ancestors and In Search of Our Ancestors. Megan will share favorite stories from both books. She will sign her books and take questions on DNA and genealogy and a range of other issues, including on celebrity roots. Let yourself be amused, amazed and touched by stories of the many creative ways people have developed to pay tribute to those who came before us, as well as tales of how some stubborn brick walls have come tumbling down in the most unexpected ways. Take Advantage of Amnesty Week and Food for Fines before September 13
As publicized, the library's fines and some fees will increase as of September 13. Fines will be .10 a day per item with a maximum fine of $5.00 per item for children's and teen book collections. Adult fines will also be .10 a day per item with a maximum fine of $10 per item. The fine rates for overdue new books and audiovisual collections vary. Click here for more information on the new fines and fees.
If you want to clear your account, there will be no fines for late items from Sept. 1-12. The library is partnering with the Food Bank of NJ to help those in need. Bring in non-perishable items at the same time.
The fees for non-resident cards will rise to $75 a year or $40 for a six month card. For those non-residents 60 years or older, a Senior Citizen card will be available for $50 a year. Photocopy and computer fees will be .15 a copy. The increase in fines and fees is driven by less funding for the library.
Additionally, the library will be closed for 12 days through Dec. 31,2010. The library will close at 6 pm on Friday evenings instead of 9 pm. For a listing of the closed days and new schedule, click here. . The library has been especially busy during the economic downturn. The slowest periods of use have been targeted for closings. We regret the inconvenience. |

Tanner Street Project from Sept. 14- Mid-November?
The Borough will begin the long awaited upgrade on Tanner St. in mid-September. It is anticipated to finish in mid-November. The construction will include new piping, pumps and storm sewers from Euclid Avenue to Kings Highway. Tanner St. will be blocked off for cars as the project unfolds. There will be pedestrian access. The Borough is arranging for additional parking with PATCO to ease the lack of parking. This project should improve the drainage and flooding problems that have plagued the library and Tanner St. for many years. The library will post more information as it is available. |
