Make a Splash @ Your Library with Fun Summer Reading!

Make a SplashEach summer, kids preschool through teen are invited to keep track of books they read during our Summer Reading Program. A new theme is introduced each summer, and theme-related programs and incentives encourage members to continue to enjoy reading through the summer. Preschoolers may participate in the program as parents read to them and record the books at the library. A celebration including entertainment and refreshments winds up the program in August. The themes for Summer Reading Program 2010 are Make a Splash: Read for kids preschool through eighth grade and Make Waves at Your Library for high school.

Funds for Library Services Restored! You did it! Thanks for Your Help!               Abraham Lincoln

Library supporters in Haddonfield and in NJ communities rallied to ask Governor Christie and the NJ legislature to restore statewide tax dollars for library services. Funds were slated to be cut by 74%. The NJ Library Association conducted a four month advocacy campaign for restoration of funds. This included collecting more than 65,000 postcards, which were sent to legislators; sending  75,000 email messages; a rally and legislative day on May 6 in Trenton; visits, calls and letters to legislators, and more. A special thank you to the people of Haddonfield and library supporters for rising to the challenge. More than 500 postcards went to our Haddonfield legislators. The upshot is that $4.2 million was restored for a total of 8 million. Last year's budget was $12 million. These funds pay for Internet connectivity, Interlibrary loan and delivery of materials, and some databases. The cost has been $1.19 per capita in NJ. That amount will be reduced but many of the core services will remain.  Thank you for saving NJ libraries! Your advocacy counted!
Director Briant Finishes NJ Library Association presidency

NJLASusan Briant, Library Director of Haddonfield Public Library, has finished her term as president of the NJ Library Association. Briant, whose theme was "Everyday Advocacy"  wrote NJLA's advocacy campaign plan for restoration of funds. She also focused on cultivating new leadership for the Association through promotion of NJ Emerging Leaders.  Briant fostered Continuing Education programs and increased revenue for NJLA by sponsoring a Green Building Fair and programs on libraries as e-government partners. She also instituted a president's electronic newsletter and now the Association's newsletter will be electronic.  The Association's annual conference in April was a success, with keynote speakers, Calvin Trillin and Lisa Scottoline, as chosen by Briant. Membership is up in NJLA. NJLA represents more than 1800 librarians of all types.

Patricia Tumulty, Executive Director of NJLA, stated "  I want to give a tremendous thank you to Susan Briant of the Haddonfield Public Library who completed her presidential year on June 30.  Susan was a tremendous leader for the Association during a very trying but ultimately rewarding year."

Briant thanks the Library Board and staff for supporting her in this effort. Said Briant, "None of this would have happened without the strong support of the Board, our hard working staff, and our community.  It was a very rewarding year. It takes a village and Haddonfield was the village."
