Love Your Library Month |
| Greetings!
February is Love Your Library month. The NJ Library Association is sponsoring a challenge for NJ Library lovers. The challenge is to recruit 10,000 library champions during February. We hope you will become a champion and support the Haddonfield Public Library. Read how to become a champion below.
We have many programs, classes, and special activities planned. Please stop in and see what's happening at the library. You can check our online Calendar of Events or the local newspapers.
The figures are in. Our library had a banner year of use. The library staff is very busy helping the community with reading, lifelong learning, computers, relaxing and recreation, employment needs, homework, children's and teen activities, and more. Check out the feature below to see how your library is being used.
Cordially,

February is Love Your Library Month!
Love Your Library during a month-long celebration of school, public, and private libraries of all types. This is a time for everyone, especially library support groups, to recognize the value of libraries and to work to assure that the Nation's libraries will continue to serve. People who use libraries and newcomers have found many ways to be Library Lovers and to celebrate their local library. Here are some ways people in Haddonfield have shown their love of the library.
- Donate time and expertise as volunteers. Current volunteers give programs, teach computer classes, help with collection maintenance, assist at the Circulation Desk, preserve historical files, and work on the popular annual Friends of the Library book sale
- Honor a friend or relative with a special book for the library
- Become a member of the Friends of the Library (membership drive now underway)
- Give to the Friends of the Library through your company's matching gift program
- Remember the library in your estate planning
- Buy a subscription to a popular magazine or donate funds for music CDs or DVDs
- Follow and contribute to the Teen Services of the library or make a suggestion by becoming a Fan on the library's Facebook page

Become a Library Champion!
Library Champions are people who love their libraries and want to be in the know about issues that may affect them. We encourage adult, children, and teens to become library champions. Fill out a champion's form at the library to enter a drawing to win prizes including posters of New Jersey Library Celebrity Champions, I-Tunes and Barnes and Noble gift certificates, and books. Being a Library Champion means:
Giving us your email address so that we can contact you when needed.
Taking appropriate action such as phone calls, emails to legislators or simply talking to your neighbors about the value of library services.
When you become a Library Champion we promise that we will only use your email address to contact you on issues affecting library service. We will never share, or sell, your contact information. Please join us in preserving library service in New Jersey. This effort is sponsored by the NJ Library Association. Click here to become a NJ Library Champion.
Here are some other ways Haddonfield citizens have been library champions:
-
Attending Borough Commissioners meetings to urge the Commissioners to invest in the library as a vital community resource - and to thank them for their support
-
Writing a letter to the editor of the Haddonfield Sun, the Retrospect, or the Courier Post in support of the library and how it enriched life
-
Telling their neighbors and friends the story of how the library assisted with learning, recreational enjoyment, (the popular DVD you saw or hot best seller you read) or fun activities for children, teens, or adults (Summer reading programs, teen movies, & cultural programs)
- Sending email messages and letters to legislators to preserve dedicated library funding
- Planning a teen event at the library, such as movies, knitting groups, or a technology event to create a fun, safe environment for teens
- Tell us your story of being a champion!

The Library is Busy - 2009 Summary and wrap up
The library had a busy year in 2009. More than 130,000 items in the collection circulated. The good news is that the circulation is up by 1,000. It would have been several thousand higher but the six days' closure of the Children's Dept. from July 31-Aug. 6, 09, due to the flood, had negative impact. Almost every category of use was up- program attendance, children's activities, and computer use. People are using the library for new reasons in the dire economic climate. Many are using job resources. Click here to see 2009 Library Statistics. The Children's Dept. expanded programming to weekends and babies, thanks to the Friends of the Library. Dorothy Peppard, Children's Librarian, began a baby lapsit program called Rockabye Readers that has been very successful. She also added programs on weekends by bringing in Sarah O'Brien. These programs have also been very successful. Read, Write, and Rock with Sarah is drawing about 30 kids each week. A mother and daughter knitting program will begin on Feb. 13, (Saturday) and run for six weeks. The library's new website went live on December 1. It is now easier to navigate and has many features that were recommended by the community. Jo-Ann Pure continued to teach computer classes, branching out into business and genealogy classes. Phil Shapiro, President of the Haddonfield Friends of the Library, has been teaching Excel classes at the library as a public service. Other progress this year was replacement of our server and staff / public computers. Pam Alles, Anne Frontino, and Jeannie Reinking did a very fine job of guiding the implementation. The Haddonfield Friends had a very successful year by expanding the annual book sale to two days. They gained many new Executive Board members who are enhancing membership. They also applied for and received funding for the Haddonfield Holiday House Tour on Dec. 10. This will greatly enhance teen services and is now in the planning. Progress on the library improvement campaign moved slowly. Nancy Weber was engaged to explore fundraising for the project. A generous donation of $177,000 was received toward a better library. The architect, Anthony Iovino, hired by the Borough Commissioners, came up with three scenarios for expansion to the present building and handicapped accessibility. Sophie Brookover began the year as our Teen Coordinator. She worked with local teens and together they added teen activities and collections. The Teen Corner was dedicated on May 29, and the teens love it. The room enhancements were made possible by shared services of several groups: the Friends of the Library; the Haddonfield Board of Education; the Borough of Haddonfield; the Library Board; and the Rotary Club of Haddonfield. Children's Librarian Dorothy Peppard and many teens, notably Margaret Finley and Vera Hinsey, who are Friends, all contributed much to launch the Teen Corner. Erica Braverman was hired as Weekend Librarian when Suzanne Ficara retired. She also serves as the Teen Coordinator and is expanding teen programs, since Sophie Brookover departed. Again, our Friends of the Library deserve great thanks for providing finances for teen programs and furnishings.
Two chess tables were placed outside the library in honor of retired Library Director Douglas Rauschenberger. This was made possible by the Friends of the Library, the Lions Club, and the Y's Men.
If you haven't visited the library lately, the staff and Library Board hope you can come in soon to see What's New @your library!

February is Black History Month
The library has displays each month. Some are by community groups, some are collections, and some are in honor of events, such as Black History Month. This month we have books, posters, and information on prominent African Americans. Healthy Hearts for women will be on display Feb. 5. There are many books and DVDs on the people and subjects displayed, in all areas of the collection, including the adult, teen, and children's collections.
Don't forget, you can search for these items by name, keyword, or title in the library's online catalog 24/7 and place a reserve. Visit the online catalog here. You may now place your own Interlibrary loans. (Borrowing from other libraries.)
