Haddonfield Public Library Newsletter
 Volume 3, number 1 January 2010
|
| Greetings!
Greetings and Happy New Year! Everyone at the library wishes you a healthy and happy year ahead. Many of you are coming on as first time subscribers. This newsletter has been published since Sept. 2008. The Haddonfield Friends of the Library have been gracious and generous in funding this e-mail communication to keep those using the library, newcomers and the community up to date on what the library offers.
On December 1, the library's redesigned website went live. If you haven't used it yet, take a look. It has much more information about programs and services. It is much easier to navigate. The month by month calendars can be helpful to you and your family in planning events. The research resources can be helpful to students and business people with convenient access from home or office, with your library card.
The Haddonfield Holiday House tour on Dec. 10, was a fabulous event. The Haddonfield Friends of the Library thank so many in the community who supported them to obtain funds for the library's teen program. Watch for improvements for teens in the coming year.
Cordially,
Susan Briant
Library Director
NJLA President 2009-10

The first meeting of the TAB will be early in January.
Teen movie nights will resume on January 15, at 6:30 pm. Star Trek, the 2009 version will be shown. Have fun with your friends, watch a movie, grab a snack or drink, and make some new friends. The schedule of movies will be published on the website later this month - the teens will pick them.

Read America's Newspapers Anytime, Anywhere!
Are you an ardent newspaper reader? Do you like saving money? Then use your library card to catch up with your favorite newspapers. This includes selections from major NJ papers. It also includes major metropolitan national newspapers (the full text) from the Boston Globe, the Chicago Tribune, the Miami Herald, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Washington Post, to name a few. Years of coverage vary but several go back at least two decades.
Locally, the Haddon Herald is included. You can search by key word. Click here to get access from the library's homepage. Insert your library barcode number to gain access.
These subscriptions are realized through shared services of NJ libraries to achieve volume discounts and maximum access for the residents of our state. The NJ Library Network has shared services for more than twenty years. |
Be a Friend of the Library and make new Friends
If you are like many people who make New Years resolutions to seek new friends, an opportunity beckons from the library. Friends of the Library groups are non-profit organizations that were founded to support the library. Generally they provide supplemental services and programs outside of the library's operating budget.
The Haddonfield Friends of the Library has a long history of supporting this library. The present group is now in its annual membership drive. Recent projects to improve the library include: adding furnishings and collections to the teen area; paying for special summer programs for children and teens; purchasing new technologies and computers for early literacy and downloadable books and movies. The list goes on but you get the picture.
Being a Friend is fun. The annual book sale in Sept. gives you a chance to be part of the phenomenal sale that draws hundreds of people from near and far.(Pictured are people browsing at the annual Friends book sale.) You build relationships with people and often establish warm friendships. Of course you help your town and the library at the same time. So, please consider being a friend. Watch for a membership application in your mail or pick one up at the library.
Additionally, the Friends as led by President Phil Shapiro and Vice-President Ruth Balton, especially thank all those home owners and volunteers who worked on the Haddonfield Holiday House Tour in Dec. The proceeds will continue to improve the teen area of the library. A special thanks to Friend Betsy Anderson. |
Downloadable Movie Service is Suspended
We recently received word that our subscription to downloadable movies through Overdrive is ending with 2009. We are now researching other options for a comparable service. In the meantime, we won't have this service. Please bear with us during the suspension. Stay tuned for more information...
In the meantime you can download more than 2000 audiobooks from our website. This very popular shared service allows you to listen to a book while driving or in other pursuits. Our Playaways collection also offers a self contained digitized book (fits in your pocket) that goes with you in your daily travels. For more information, click here.. |
What is the Library Worth to You?
In trying economic times, people turn to libraries. Libraries are very busy all over the state and nation. Libraries assist people with job searching, improving skills, and by providing resources at affordable prices. Check out how much money you save by clicking here for our Libraries Value Calculator.
Our thanks to the Maine and New Jersey State Libraries for adapting this calculator for the use of NJ libraries and their customers.

Tax Information
Increasingly, libraries are finding themselves as partners of government, especially in terms of electronic information. For years, the state and federal governments have distributed tax booklets and forms in NJ public libraries. Many libraries partner with agencies to provide tax counseling.
In 2010, the State of NJ will not be distributing tax publications in libraries. The federal government will continue its distribution service. We will make every effort to assist by having NJ frequently used forms for sale for .15 a copy. Our librarians are glad to retrieve forms from websites for taxes and other applications. For more information, email Reference@haddonfieldlibrary.org or call the Reference Dept. at 429-1304. Forms can be obtained from www.irs.gov and here for NJ .

The Year in Review and Looking Ahead....
Thanks to our staff, Library Board, Friends of the Library, Borough of Haddonfield, and you, the past year has been productive for the library. Our planning for a better library progressed. We did work with Arcari and Iovino Architects to learn about options for the existing facility. An advisory committee helped to guide the architect.
A subcommittee headed by Commissioner Ed Borden has been reviewing sites for the library. A new possible site on Kings Highway, home of the Oriental rug store, is being explored. The subcommittee will finish its report early in the New Year.
The library has continued to upgrade its services and programs. The Haddonfield Friends of the Library have done a yeoman's job to provide supplemental funding to expand teen, children's and adult programs. Programs for children were held on Saturdays and evenings to reach those who need weekend events.
Thanks to generous and talented people in our community, a variety of adult cultural programs were held. Watch for more in 2010 and visit our calendar often.
Our Children's Dept. began Spanish story hours and new programs with Sarah O'Brien. Children's Librarian Dorothy Peppard also instituted a Rockabye Readers program for babies aged 6-18 months. Many programs come from your suggestions and ideas. If you care to share one, send an email to contact@haddonfieldlibrary.org | |
