The Inukshuk
- by John Glanzer
Warmth.
weaving out of nothing. Shimmering waves
give way to light,
Then quickens into life
And I become.
The Gods breathed me
into being
And I am. I live.
And I will.

Greetings!
In his book, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions,Thomas Kuhn describes the importance of identifying the paradigms that influence the course of scientific research. It is not possible to explain achievements and breakthroughs simply by examining the methods of the successful scientist. We need to understand many layers of the cultural context in which he worked, and to trace their influences. This challenge faces spiritual scientists (us) as well. How well do we understand the factors that influence our research? The primary influence, of course, is Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925), who introduced anthroposophy at the turn of the last century. Then, there are 100s (1000's?) of researchers who have taken up the work in surprisingly diverse ways, generating a vast body of literature and practical achievements. And today, at the beginning of the 21st century, a new generation of researchers is emerging, with quite different ideas about what constitutes research. (See for instance, the Think Outword link in Upcoming Events below.) What is spiritual scientific research, today? Given all the diversity of activity, how are we connected? Is it possible, through organs like the research section in this eNews, to begin seeing what unites us? Read on... Mark "Idealists make other people wealthy." Attributed to Henry Ford |

Frank Chester Research Residency and Symposium for Spiritual Scientific Research - Threefold Centre - November 2010
- by James Steil
...Although it was difficult to define (and equally-difficult to admit to), clearly, spiritual scientific research is an essential part of what it means to be an Anthroposophist. I personally believe to call oneself an Anthroposophist means at the very-least one has in interest in such matters. Ideally, we are all spiritual scientific researchers. Moving beyond particular results arising from the Henry Barnes Fund, what would be of greater benefit for the Anthroposophical Society is to educate and inspire many more individuals to take-up their own research, at whatever level it is possible. Although methods vary, what remains constant is the instrument: the human-being. The path of knowledge always includes self-knowledge, and if, by reflecting on the work of others, we illumine within ourselves capacities for Spiritual Scientific research, then the fruits of this endeavor will become seeds - for the future of Anthroposophy....Read full article.

Group Meditation
- by Nick Thomas (UK)
...The implication for group meditation is clear: the strongest member of the group may influence the others. Whether or not that is benign depends upon the moral development of that member, as clarified later in the same lecture. However this only applies to a situation where a change of consciousness of the members of the group occurs, as described earlier, for then the astral body is liberated; it does not apply generally to a group saying a verse together. An esoteric student who has mastered the astral body need have nothing to fear, but how many of us can be complacent in that respect? Read full article.
"Meditation as Contemplative Inquiry" by Arthur Zajonc, and "Group Meditation" by Michael Lipson provide different perspectives on this topic. If you have studied either of these books, please consider writing a short review to help readers get a full understanding of this topic. -Ed.

Hidden Corners
(Sometimes the most interesting part!)
* "Some of you have wondered where I am headed with the current series of articles on molecular biology. What does it all mean? Am I trying to say something about mechanism versus vitalism, or materialism versus a more spiritual view of the world, or issues such as reductionism, emergentism, holism (whatever these might mean) - or, most perilously of all (if one's concern is for light rather than heat), intelligent design versus standard evolutionary doctrine?" - From the Introduction by Steve Talbott to the current issue of NetFuture* QUIZ: Identify the authors of these contrasting quotes ("answers" are at the bottom of left column): - 1."It is not clear that intelligence has any long-term survival value. Bacteria and other single-celled organisms will live on, if all other life on earth is wiped out by our actions" - 2. "We live in a scientific age; yet we assume that knowledge of science is the prerogative of only a small number of human beings, isolated and priestlike in their laboratories. This is not true. Science is part of the reality of living; it is the what, the how and the why of everything in our experience."
- 3. "Everything that will be invented in the course of earthly evolution is already present in the infinite wisdom of nature."

"...The "Rudolf Steiner Express" is ready to take to the rails in a journey which will take it through four countries and 20 cities of central Europe. The five day journey from 24 to 28 February - from Cologne to Vienna and back via Steiner's birth place in Kraljevec in what is now Croatia but was then still part of Austria-Hungary - comprises a comprehensive programme of events both on the train and in the stations visited by the train, including a special cultural programme in the Rheingold club car..."
