"There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men. A man to whom God has given riches, wealth and honour, so that he wants nothing for his soul of all that he desires, yet God gives him not the power to eat thereof..."
- Ecclesiastes 6

Modern Protestants have promoted the view that Sloth - one of the seven deadly sins - means chronic physical laziness. In so doing, they have suppressed the meaning of the original word, Acedia, which refers to apathy and the gradual destruction of the human spirit.
Acedia did not vanish with the Middle Ages - she is alive and well today. In small ways, we are providing opportunities to overcome her influence.

He also describes an upcoming exhibition in Wolfsburg, Germany, which will be the first major Steiner retrospective ever staged outside the anthroposophic community.
"...I keep bumping into him, and each encounter makes me want to deepen our acquaintance. A gardener I met praised the ecological marvels of biodynamic farming, a Steiner innovation. An art historian introduced me to the Goetheanum, a templelike edifice that Steiner - an expert on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's theories of natural metamorphosis and the physiology of color - designed to anchor the anthroposophical colony in Dornach, Switzerland. An English professor pointed out that Saul Bellow had been a Steiner devotee ..."
