Letter from the Editor

Mark McAlisterIt has always seemed obvious to me that the Anthroposophical Society is primarily active in the sphere of culture and spiritual life.  Matters of rights and economics are also important, but they are not our main focus.

I recently heard a fresh insight.  The possibility to have a free spiritual life in today's world is threatened.  For instance, it seems to become more and more difficult to sustain a conversation for more than a few minutes, before somebody decides it's time to check their phone or update their cyberstatus.

Perhaps our Society is actually an organization primarily concerned with rights.  By culivating the life of soul in our (wider) communities, we are helping others to overcome various addictive behaviours, and rediscover what it means to be human.

Our newsletter gives impressions of how we are doing this, and of the new challenges that we see emerging.  New contributors are welcome!

Youth Workshop In Toronto

Whiteboard

The visit of Arthur Zajonc to Thornhill last Fall sparked many new anthroposophical activities in the area.  Of particular interest is the formation of the Anthroposophical Network of Young Adults. This article describes their recent organizational meeting.  (The above photo is from one of the sessions)...

...We were encouraged to listen to each other's hearts and reminded that our strength lies in supporting each other. At the heart of this workshop was the desire for collaboration and this includes strengthening our containers and capacities with intergenerational guidance and mentorship born of mutual trust and respect. - We hope to meet again to try to answer our burning questions, not only with our heads and our hearts, but also with our hands. This is an ongoing project. There are currently twenty four members, some interested in attending regular meetings and others offering themselves as resource people.  Full article...

Holy Nights At Arscura
 - Submitted by Vibeke Ball
Holy Nights

...This year, Regine Kurek led us into a different kind of work. As previously, we looked again at the language of the stars at this time and tried to see how this cosmic language could lead us, inspire us to a creative deed together. Reading from the Saturn-Uranus opposition this year, we learned to understand this time  as a preparation, a time where the old and the new come up to face each other everywhere. The guiding words were: Setting the stage! Relinquish certainty (Saturn), Embrace discovery (Uranus)! - We shared with each other how it had been, to hold a 'seed thought' from last year over into this year and what new arose from and by doing that. Whitehorse Conference Reflections
 - by Jeff Baggaley

...So much of this understanding of [Native] American spirituality applies to us as anthroposophists, in my view, not least when you look at our history as a Society since Steiner's death. Part of this history has been well recorded in so far as it is reflected in the history of the First Class in a recent book by Johannes Kiersch called A History of the School of Spiritual Science. The divisions, dissensions and expulsions within the Society point to nothing but our common humanity. How could it be otherwise? - This history, however, seen from an American point of view, is a wonderful opportunity for us to learn, to heal, to grow, and to move forward as a Society strengthened by this suffering. Full article...
October Workshop With Marko Pogacnik

Cosmogram
In late October 2009, Marko Pogacnik led a workshop with 30 people on the Thornhill campus.  The photo on the right, taken at the edge of the ravine, shows a cosmogram made by the whole group out of sand. For the full article, click here.

...At the back of the property in the small sheep pasture we all stand quietly and try to perceive this particular spot. Of course we are not told ahead of time what this spot is so we can have our own experience and not step into the power of suggestion. For the most part everyone feels a very positive energy in this location. People share their perceptions of this spot in the landscape and of course, as individuals, we perceive in different ways: some feel it in their bodies, some have an imagination, and some receive words. We learn that the earth is actively producing new qualities and they express themselves in places such as this which Marko called a Gaia place...
"Encircling Light" Conference:
The Financial Picture

The conference Planning Group met for a final time in Vancouver in mid-September to reflect on the conference and to bring the financial picture up to date.  When all aspects were taken into account and all outstanding commitments met, there remained a surplus of $7000.  After thoughtful discussion, and with an aim to respecting the intentions of the conference and to furthering work recognized there, it was decided to disburse these funds as follows...Read more

Letter from Cornelius Pietzner

Dear Friends and Members,

With this first issue of Anthroposophy Worldwide in the new year, we witness again the scope of events, people, initiatives, gatherings and conferences from both young and old around the world. There are reports on more introspective considerations, or the results of inner review that show their effects in external changes and new decisions. Other reports depict seemingly more external events that, however, may stimulate deep inner questioning and can even be life-changing for participants. This is a central theme for the life of anthroposophy throughout the world. The mysterious and inseparable connection between the inner individual soul and events of the external world-- and their mutual effect on each other-- becomes increasingly crucial in our time.

Thus the central themes of each issue of Anthroposophy Worldwide are subtle-- not always so easily identifiable from the actual reports and articles. Rather, there are underlying threads to be distilled that create ties and build relationships. When studying a painting, for example, one can be struck by the event or phenomenon it depicts, say a street scene or a seascape. Yet what really enhances the experience and impression are the contrasts and dimensions of light and darkness, the polarities in form, the elements of composition that create a mood or dynamic within the  particular seascape or street happenings. This enhances the impression. Perhaps this is also a way to think about what is written about and represented in each issue of Anthroposophy Worldwide. I refrain from stretching the picture too far, so to speak, but the overall impression, with its moods, its polarities, dynamic, tensions from each of the stories paint a larger picture of the living element of the Anthroposophical Society.

In this issue we are also including information about the 3rd International English Week Conference: "Entering the 21st Century Spiritually" to be held at the Goetheanum from August 2-7, 2010. We hope the themes and issues we will be addressing, as well as the artistic presentations (and the Mystery Dramas with simultaneous English translation), will be of interest to you. We would be very pleased to welcome you to the Goetheanum this summer!

With all good wishes
Cornelius Pietzner
