Inner work is the foundation for community building.  However, we also need to communicate outwardly with each other, and this is often difficult in our large country.   So, members have expressed interest in forming Internet discussion groups.  One emerging theme is "spiritual science in academia".If you are a Professor or student and would like to explore this, or if you have other suggestions,  please contact Mark McAlister.

Dear

With Michaelmas still echoing, we experience a manifoldness of activity, initiatives and gatherings at the Goetheanum that seem to reflect issues and
concerns of the world. A number of these are described in the accompanying issue of Anthroposophy Worldwide. From the inner life of an enterprise, issues of sustainability, the permeation of the arts in daily life, concerns with the substances of the earth, and social and healing impulses that are being discussed in the major Curative Education and Social Therapy Conference presently taking place at the Goetheanum- all these are continual reminders and enjoinders for the penetration and insight that anthroposophical spiritual science gives to the actual concerns of our time. The autumn is both a harvest of abundance and diversity, and also encouragement to strengthen the courage to deepen, continue and go further in all these areas. The revitalization of the spirit through human encounters, exchange, and collaboration is evident at the Goetheanum during this time. Hosting and creating active spaces for the fruitful meeting of people from around the world in this manner is a central attribute of the Anthroposophical Society, the Goetheanum and the School of Spiritual Science.

With our best wishes for your work,
Sincerely,
Cornelius Pietzner

The theme for this year's Christmas Conference at the Goetheanum is Art and Initiation. Rudolf Steiner, like no other, demonstrated not only epistemologically and theoretically but practically and creatively how art and initiation have gone together, hand in hand, throughout millennia of the evolution of humanity. As one example
among many, we think of the indications he gave in Berlin on December 17, 1906 (Ga 96). The steps of initiation in ancient times and how they call forth the experience of seeing the sun at midnight are described. The mantra-like verse that sounds at the beginning of this lecture is the first of its kind composed by Rudolf Steiner; its recitation by Marie Steiner is likely the very first artistic offering in connection with a lecture by Rudolf Steiner. It is emblematic of the deep inner relationship between art and initiation that we can view this event not only from a historical
perspective but as a transition to the present as well.
This two-sided effect has acquired increasing strength in the intervening years through the artistic forming of the 1907 Congress of the Theosophical Society in Munich as well as through indications in many lectures by Rudolf Steiner on the theme of modern rosicrucian initiation -
which also means in harmony with the Michaelic age.  This reached an initial culmination in the mystery drama, The Portal of Initiation, A Rosicrucian Mystery through Rudolf Steiner (1910). We are pleased that we will be able to see the drama during the conference, first in a progression of scenes in the evening performances, and then in
its entirety as a unique beginning to the new year on January 1, 2009.
On December 27, we want to remember the 60th anniversary of the death of Marie Steiner. We find in her a personality who followed with devotion and intensity the steps of the development of the arts as well as Rudolf Steiner's groundbreaking path of initiation.  Sergej Prokofieff will offer reflections concerning the Holy nights. These events will be available without cost to all of our friends as a Christmas gift from the Goetheanum.
We look forward to welcoming you to the Goetheanum for this Christmas Conference.

In the moment when one wants to ascend to the higher members of the human constitution, one will be unable to do so unless one allows the world to flow into an artistic apprehension of the human being because the world itself creates artistically where it creates spiritually. thus no one can understand the human being who cannot allow what
is scientific to transform into the artistic within his own inner perception.
Rudolf Steiner, August 24, 1923, Penmaenmawr, GA 284
